Steering Gear Replacement (Electronic Power Steering)

Steering Gear Replacement (Electronic Power Steering)

Removal Procedure

Caution: Secure the steering wheel utilizing a strap to prevent rotation. Locking of the steering column will prevent damage and a possible malfunction of the SIR system. The steering wheel must be secured in position before disconnecting the following components:

* The steering column
* The intermediate shaft
* The steering gear

After disconnecting these components, do not move the front tires and wheels. Failure to follow these procedures may cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result in possible damage to the SIR coil.

1. Turn the front wheels to the straight forward position and secure the steering wheel from moving.
2. Disengage the rack and pinion outer tie rod ends from the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement (Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement).
3. Separate the intermediate steering shaft from the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement).

4. Remove the transmission rear mount bolt.

5. Remove the steering gear bolts, nuts, and washers from the steering gear.

Note: The position of the steering gear will need to be manipulated to remove it through the left front wheel opening.

6. Remove the steering gear through the left front wheel opening.
7. Transfer any parts as needed.

Installation Procedure

1. Install the steering gear through the left front wheel opening.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution (Fastener Caution).

Note: Start all of the bolts and nuts by hand before finalizing any torques.

2. Install the steering gear bolts, nuts, and washers to the steering gear.
Tighten the bolts to 70 Nm (52 lb ft) plus an additional 90 degrees.

3. Install the transmission rear mount bolt and tighten to 90 Nm (66 lb ft).
4. Install the intermediate steering shaft to the steering gear. Refer to Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement (Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement).
5. Install the rack and pinion outer tie rod ends to the steering knuckles. Refer to Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement (Steering Linkage Outer Tie Rod Replacement).
6. Adjust the front toe. Refer to Wheel Alignment - Steering Wheel Angle and/or Front Toe Adjustment (Service and Repair).
