Introduction

Some 2004 model year Scion xA and Scion xB vehicles with an automatic transmission may exhibit a M.I.L. ON" condition with DTC P0741 (Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid Performance) stored. Inspect and if applicable, follow the repair procedure in this bulletin.

Warranty Information

Applicable Warranty:

This repair is covered under the Toyota Powertrain Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 60 months or 60,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.





Required SSTs

NOTE:

Repair Procedure

1. Verify proper shift solenoid valve SL operation.

A. Remove the oil pan.

B. Remove the solenoid valve SL.





C. Connect a positive (+) lead to a terminal of the solenoid connector, and a negative (-) lead to a terminal of the solenoid connector as shown.

D. When battery positive voltage is supplied to the shift solenoid valve, verify that the solenoid valve moves or makes an operating noise.

E. Replace the solenoid valve if it does not operate normally. If the solenoid valve is OK, continue to step 2.





2. Remove and inspect the torque converter assembly clutch. Check for abnormalities in the oil seal of the torque converter assembly, following the inspection method below:

A. Drain the fluid from the torque converter assembly by keeping the installation surface for the drive plate facing upward.

B. Stand the torque converter assembly as shown.

C. Using a penlight, illuminate the oil seal keeping the torque converter assembly standing upright. Check for the oil seal turned inward or damaged.

3. If the torque converter assembly seal is damaged, replace the torque converter assembly by referring to the Technical Information System (TIS), 2004 model year Scion xA or Scion xB Repair Manual: Automatic Transaxle: Automatic Transaxle Unit.

4. If no damage can be seen, continue with the Repair Manual diagnostics for DTC P0741. Refer to TIS, 2004 model year Scion xA or Scion xB Repair Manual: Diagnostics: Automatic Transaxle: P0741.
