Applicable Warranty*:
This repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.

* Warranty application is limited to correction of a problem based upon a customer's specific complaint.

Repair Procedure

1. Verify excessive looseness of transmission shift control lever when shifting from gear to gear.

2. Remove the shift lever knob sub-assembly and console box sub-assembly. Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS), 2004 or 2005 model year Scion xB Repair Manual: Manual Transmission/transaxle: Floor Shift Shift Lever Assy (Mtm).

3. Inspect the engagement of the transmission control select cable clip at the shift lever retainer. Verify the cable is pressed down fully into the shift assembly. If not, reinstall the cable and confirm that it will remain fully in place. (The illustration below shows the right side transmission shift control select cable mispositioned with an unsecured clip.)

4. If damage has occurred to the retainer clip, replace the transmission cable assembly. Refer to TIS, 2004 or 2005 model year Scion xB Repair Manual: Manual Transmission/transaxle: Floor Shift Shift Lever Assy (Mtm).

5. If the transmission control cables are properly engaged, inspect other transmission shift components.
