Introduction
Some 2005 - 2009 model year Scion tC vehicles may exhibit a condition where the driver's seatback will not adjust when operating the rear seat access release lever.
Follow the procedure provided in this TSB to repair the rear seat access release lever and correct this condition.

This TSB applies to vehicles produced BEFORE the Production Change Effective VIN shown.
Warranty Information
APPLICABLE WARRANTY
^ This repair is covered under the Toyota Comprehensive Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.
^ Warranty application is limited to occurrence of the specified condition described in this bulletin.

Repair Procedure
Disassembly
1. Remove the LH front seat assembly.
A. Disconnect the negative (-) battery terminal.
CAUTION
B. Use a plastic pry tool to disengage the claws and carefully remove the plastic seat track covers.
NOTE
Refer to the appropriate model Repair Manual for detailed instructions on how to remove the plastic seat track covers.
C. Move the seatback to the full upright position.
D. Remove the seat track securing bolts.
E. Disconnect the electrical connectors and remove the complete seat assembly.
2. Remove the front seatback cover.
A. Using a plastic pry tool detach the claw and remove the reclining adjuster release handle.
NOTE
Do NOT re-use the original reclining adjuster release handle since it may be deformed during removal.
B. Using a plastic pry tool detach the 4 claws and remove the bezel.
NOTE
Do NOT re-use the original reclining control bezel since it may be deformed during removal.
C. Detach the 2 hooks on the seat bottom securing the seat cover.
HINT
Seat bottom shown.
D. Remove the 3 hog rings.
HINT
Seat bottom shown.
E. Detach the hooks.
F. Remove the hog ring.
HINT
Repeat for opposite side.
G. Remove the headrest supports by detaching the 2 claws on each support.
NOTE
Do NOT re-use the original headrest supports since they may be deformed during removal.
H. Remove the 2 hog rings.

WITH FRONT SEAT SIDE AIRBAG:
Remove the nut and detach the hook.
Then remove the seatback cover brackets.
I. Remove the seatback cover (with pad) from the seat adjuster.
NOTE
Do NOT remove the 8 hog rings that attach the seatback cover and the seatback pad.
3. Remove the reclining adjuster lower inside cover RH (inside shown).
4. Remove the reclining adjuster lower inside cover LH (inside shown).
A. Remove the airbag (if equipped) and cable routing clip from the back of the reclining adjuster lower inside cover LH.
5. Remove the right side bolt that attaches the cable and the bracket.
NOTE
^ Do NOT re-use the original bolt since the thread lock may be worn.
^ Right side shown.
6. Install and tighten the NEW washer and bolt in the order shown.'
7. Remove the 2 left side bolts that attach the cables and the bracket.
NOTE
^ Do NOT re-use the original bolts since the thread lock may be worn.
^ Left side shown.
8. Install and tighten the NEW washer and bolt in the order shown.
NOTE
Repeat procedure for opposite side.
HINT
You have done 3 bolt installations at this time.
Reassembly
1. Install the reclining adjuster inside cover RH (lower).
2. Install the reclining adjuster inside cover LH (lower).
3. Attach the airbag (if equipped) and cable routing clips to the reclining adjuster inside cover LH.
4. Install the seatback cover (with pad) over the seat frame.
5. Install the 2 NEW headrest supports.
With front seat side airbag: Fully cover the airbag with the 2 seatback cover brackets. Then attach the hook and tighten the nut.
Torque: 5 N*m (56 kgf*cm, 49 in*lbf)
CAUTION
6. Install the 2 hog rings.
7. Install the hog ring. Repeat for opposite side.
8. Attach the hooks.
9. Install the 3 hog rings.
10. Attach the 2 hooks.
11. Apply double-sided tape to the seat pad.
A. Apply the double sided tape along the inner edge of the seat pad opening.
B. Carefully remove the backing from one side of the double-sided tape.
C. Press the front seatback cover against the tape adhesive side.
NOTE
^ Do NOT attempt to remove the tape once applied to the cover.
^ Do NOT reuse the tape if removed once.
12. Install the NEW reclining control bezel.
13. Install the NEW reclining release handle.
14. Confirm proper operation.
15. Reinstall the LF Front Seat Assembly. Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS) applicable model year Repair Manual:

After Repair
NOTICE
^ The thread lock on the new bolt needs 24 hours to properly cure. The front seat recline mechanism should not be used for 24 hours after NEW installation.
^ Please advise the customer to NOT use the reclining release handle for 24 hours after the repair.
