Brake Bleeding: Service and Repair

BRAKE SYSTEM (OTHER): BRAKE FLUID: BLEEDING

HINT
If any work is performed on the brake system or if air in the brake lines is suspected, bleed air from the brake system.

NOTICE:
* Apply the parking brake before bleeding the brakes.
* Add brake fluid to keep the level between the MIN and MAX lines of the reservoir while bleeding the brakes.
* If brake fluid leaks onto any painted surface, immediately wash it off.
* When bleeding air, select the suitable procedure listed below.

1. REMOVE CENTER COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER Service and Repair

2. BLEED BRAKE LINE

(a) Remove the brake master cylinder reservoir filler cap assembly.

(b) Add brake fluid to keep the level between the MIN and MAX lines of the reservoir while bleeding the brakes.

Brake fluid:

SAE J1703 or FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3

(c) Remove the bleeder plug cap.

(d) Connect a vinyl tube to the bleeder plug.

(e) Depress the brake pedal several times, and then loosen the bleeder plug with the pedal depressed.*1

(f) When fluid stops coming out, tighten the bleeder plug, and then release the brake pedal.*2

(g) Repeat *1 and *2 until all the air in the fluid is completely bled out.

(h) Tighten the bleeder plug completely.

for front brake - Torque : 8.3 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 73 in-lbf)

for rear brake - Torque : 11 Nm (112 kgf-cm, 8 ft-lbf)

(i) Install the bleeder plug cap.

(j) Repeat the above procedure for each wheel to bleed the brake line.

(k) Check for brake fluid leaks.

(l) Inspect the fluid level Testing and Inspection.

3. BLEED BRAKE SYSTEM

(a) Bleed the brake master cylinder.

NOTICE:
* If the master cylinder is reinstalled or if the reservoir becomes empty, bleed the master cylinder.
* To prevent brake fluid from damaging painted surfaces, cover any surrounding parts with a piece of cloth.

(1) Remove the brake master cylinder reservoir filler cap assembly.

(2) Add brake fluid to keep the level between the MIN and MAX lines of the reservoir while bleeding the brakes.

Brake fluid:

SAE J1703 or FMVSS No. 116 DOT 3

(3) Using a union nut wrench, disconnect the 2 brake lines from the brake master cylinder sub-assembly.

(4) Slowly depress the brake pedal and hold it.*1

(5) Cover the 2 outer holes with your fingers and release the brake pedal.*2

(6) Repeat *1 and *2 3 or 4 times.

(7) Using a union nut wrench, connect the 2 brake lines to the master cylinder.

Torque : 15 Nm (155 kgf-cm, 11 ft-lbf)

NOTICE:
Use the formula to calculate special torque values for situations where a union nut wrench is combined with a torque wrench Service Precautions.

(b) Bleed the brake line.

NOTICE:
* Bleed the brake line of the wheel farthest from the master cylinder first.
* Add brake fluid to keep the level between the MIN and MAX lines of the reservoir while bleeding the brakes.

(1) Remove the bleeder plug cap.

(2) Connect a vinyl tube to the bleeder plug.

(3) Depress the brake pedal several times, and then loosen the bleeder plug with the pedal depressed.*1

(4) When fluid stops coming out, tighten the bleeder plug, and then release the brake pedal.*2

(5) Repeat *1 and *2 until all the air in the fluid is completely bled out.

(6) Tighten the bleeder plug completely.

for front brake - Torque : 8.3 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 73 in-lbf)

for rear brake - Torque : 11 Nm (112 kgf-cm, 8 ft-lbf)

(7) Install the bleeder plug cap.

(8) Repeat the above procedure for each wheel to bleed the brake line.

(c) Bleed the brake actuator.

NOTICE:
After bleeding the air from the brake system, if the correct height or feel of the brake pedal cannot be obtained, bleed the air from the brake actuator assembly with the Techstream by following the procedures below.

(1) Depress the brake pedal more than 20 times with the ignition switch off.

(2) Connect the Techstream to the DLC3 and turn the ignition switch to ON.

NOTICE:
Do not start the engine.

(3) Turn the Techstream on and enter the following menus: Chassis / ABS/VSC/TRAC / Utility / Air Bleeding.

(4) Bleed the brake actuator by following the instructions on the Techstream.

(5) After bleeding air, tighten each bleeder plug.

for front brake - Torque : 8.3 Nm (85 kgf-cm, 73 in-lbf)

for rear brake - Torque : 11 Nm (112 kgf-cm, 8 ft-lbf)

(6) Turn the Techstream off and disconnect the Techstream from the DLC3.

(7) Turn the ignition switch off.

(d) Check for brake fluid leaks.

(e) Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir Testing and Inspection.

4. INSTALL CENTER COWL TOP VENTILATOR LOUVER Service and Repair
