Removal





STEERING GEAR / LINKAGE: STEERING GEAR: REMOVAL

1. PLACE FRONT WHEELS FACING STRAIGHT AHEAD

2. SECURE STEERING WHEEL

(a) Secure the steering wheel with the seat belt in order to prevent it from rotating.





HINT
This operation is useful for preventing damage to the spiral cable.

3. REMOVE COLUMN HOLE COVER SILENCER SHEET Removal

4. DISCONNECT NO. 2 STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT ASSEMBLY Removal

5. DISCONNECT NO. 1 STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

(a) Remove clip A and the No. 1 steering column hole cover and detach clip B from the body.

NOTICE:
Do not damage clip A or clip B.

6. REMOVE FRONT WHEELS

7. REMOVE CENTER ENGINE UNDER COVER Removal

8. REMOVE NO. 1 ENGINE UNDER COVER Removal

9. REMOVE FRONT FENDER LINER RH Removal

10. REMOVE FRONT FENDER LINER LH Removal

11. REMOVE REAR ENGINE UNDER COVER RH Removal

12. REMOVE REAR ENGINE UNDER COVER LH Removal

13. REMOVE NO. 2 ENGINE UNDER COVER Removal

14. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER REINFORCEMENT LH Removal

15. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER REINFORCEMENT RH Removal

16. DISCONNECT FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY LH Removal

17. DISCONNECT FRONT STABILIZER LINK ASSEMBLY RH Removal

18. DISCONNECT TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY LH

(a) Remove the cotter pin and nut.

(b) Install SST to the tie rod end.

NOTICE:
Make sure that the top of SST aligns with the top of the tie rod end.

(c) Using SST, disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.

NOTICE:
* Apply grease to the bolt threads and the tip of SST.
* Be sure to tighten the string firmly to secure SST to the steering knuckle and prevent it from falling off.
* Install SST with the center nut so that A and B are parallel. Otherwise, the dust cover may be damaged.
* Be sure to place the wrench on the part indicated in the illustration.
* Do not damage the front disc brake dust cover.
* Do not damage the ball joint dust cover.
* Do not damage the steering knuckle.

19. DISCONNECT TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY RH

HINT
Use the same procedure described for the LH side.

20. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER REAR BRACE LH Removal

21. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION MEMBER REAR BRACE RH Removal

22. REMOVE FRONT SUSPENSION CROSSMEMBER SUB-ASSEMBLY Removal

23. REMOVE NO. 1 STEERING COLUMN HOLE COVER SUB-ASSEMBLY

(a) Remove the No. 1 steering column hole cover from the steering gear.





24. REMOVE STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT

(a) Place matchmarks on the steering intermediate shaft and steering gear.

(b) Remove the bolt and steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear.

25. REMOVE STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY

(a) Remove the 2 bolts, 2 nuts and steering gear from the front suspension crossmember.





NOTICE:
Because the nut has its own stopper, do not turn the nut. Loosen the bolt with the nut fixed in place.

26. SECURE STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY

(a) Using SST, secure the steering gear between aluminum plates in a vise.

27. REMOVE TIE ROD END SUB-ASSEMBLY LH

(a) Put matchmarks on the tie rod end LH and steering gear.
