Turbocharger: Testing and Inspection

1. Inspect oil delivery and return tubing and fittings for leakage or wear. Replace as necessary.
2. Inspect the coolant fittings and tubing for leaks or wear. Replace as necessary.
3. Remove the crossover exhaust pipe and examine the exhaust turbine for for excessive carbon deposits. If found, oil is leaking from the turbine chamber.
4. Remove the inlet tube from the turbocharger and inspect for excessive oil. If oil is found, it does no necessarily mean the turbo is bad. In most cases it is the normal oil mist contained in the blow-by gas.
When oil leaks from the inlet side it will be accompanied with a rattling from the turbine shaft.

Axial Movement:

5. Remove the turbo and measure the turbine axial (side to side) movement of the turbine shaft.
AXIAL CLEARANCE
0.09 mm (0.0035 in)

Radial Movement:

6. Through the oil outlet hole, measure the turbine radial (up and down) movement.
RADIAL CLEARANCE
0.17 mm (0.0067 in)
The turbocharger is not serviceable. If any faults are found, replace as a unit.
