SUBJECT: SELF CONTAINED THRUST BEARING TOTAL END-PIAY MEASURING PROCEDURE

THIS SERVICE BULLETIN IS SUPPLIED FOR INFORMATION ONLY

FIGURE 1 - THRUST BEARING:

All 1985 FWD and 4WD 4-Door Sedan, Station Wagon, and XT Coupe vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions will have the previous style thrust bearing and selective washer set replaced in production with a new style self contained thrust bearing assembly. (See Figure 1).

This production change starts with transmission number 365875 and the following VIN'S:

4-Door Sedan 233 496
Station Wagon 446 574
XT Coupe 303 494


To install a new self contained thrust bearing assembly into an automatic transmission, follow the procedure below:

PROCEDURE

1) Remove the pump and thrust bearing from the transmission.

2) Using a depth gauge and the low and reverse brake gauge- (P/N 398 643 600), measure dimension "L". (See Figure 2).

3) With the same tools used in step #2, measure dimension "1". (See Figure 3).

4) To determine thrust bearing thickness, Dimension "T", use the formula below to select the thrust bearing closest to specification.

"T" = ("L" + 0.4 mm) - (0.25 mm to 0.50 mm) - "1".

FIGURE 2 LOW AND REVERSE BRAKE GAUGE:

An explanation of the formula can be found below:

"L" - The distance from the top of the Low and Reverse brake gauge placed on the transmission case, to the forward clutch. (See Figure 2).
0.4 mm - The transmission pump gasket thickness.

0.25 mm to 0.50 mm - The required oil clearance for the thrust bearing which can vary anywhere from 0.25 mm to 0.50 mm in order to obtain the proper total end-play.

FIGURE 3 LOW AND REVERSE BRAKE:

"1" - The distance between the mating surface of the transmission pump which contacts the transmission case, to the end of the transmission pump extension. (See Figure 3).
When Dimension "T" is determined, the proper thrust bearing may be selected from the list below.
