M/T Gear Shift Lever - Rattling Noises

1985 THROUGH 1987 MANUAL TRANSMISSION VEHICLE EXCEPT CARRYOVER MODELS

SUBJECT: RATTLING NOISE FROM MANUAL TRANSMISSION GEAR SHIFT LEVER

If you encounter a complaint of a rattling noise from the manual transmission gear shift lever area, the noise may be caused by contact between the shift joint and the transmission shifter boss.

If the components mentioned above are found to be the source of the noise, a modified shift joint bolt and shift lever cushion should be installed.

MODIFIED PARTS REQUIRED:

Bolt Part Number 33045GA021 Cushion Part Number 33154GA210

1. Remove the original bolt joining the shift joint and transmission shift boss as shown in figure 1.

2. Remove the shift lever from its socket and remove the original cushion and seat. See figure 2.

3. Reinstall the shift lever using the modified cushion and bolt as shown in figure 3.
4. Road test the vehicle to ensure proper shifter operation. This procedure can be claimed for vehicles within the terms of the Subaru Limited Warranty using the following information:
