A/C Compressor - Compressor Oil Information

83subaru1

NUMBER 10-34-83

DATE 02-17-83
APPLICABILITY ALL MODELS WITH SUBARU AIR CONDITIONING

SUBJECT: COMPRESSOR OIL
This bulletin is for information only. Compressor oil will last indefinitely in a sealed system. Therefore, a compressor oil level check is necessary only when the system is opened, such as for a component part replacement, or if there is a leak in the system.

I. COMPRESSOR OIL - Only "Suniso 5GS" or an equivalent refrigeration oil can be used in Subaru air conditioning systems. The refrigeration oil must be free from moisture, dust, metal, etc. It should not be transferred from one container into another and the container must be capped when not in use. Never return used oil to the container.

II. OIL RETURN PROCEDURE - Before checking the compressor oil level, the following procedure must be used to return the refrigerant oil to the compressor.
NOTE: A minimal amount of refrigeration oil will remain in the rest of the system.

a). Place the mode lever in the "A/C MAX" position. b). Turn the thermostat to the coldest setting. c). Turn the fan switch to the highest blower speed. d). Start the engine and run for twenty minutes at idle. e). Turn off the engine and slowly discharge the refrigerant from the system. Observe all cautions mentioned in the 1983 Subaru service manual (MSA-116).

III. COMPRESSOR OIL LEVEL CHECK

1. HITACHI SYSTEM - SOA 204 080, SOA 204 081, SOA 204 082, SOA 204 083 or line installed A/C.

SYSTEM OIL SPECIFICATION - 150 cc (Sunico 5GS)

The above Hitachi systems do not require addition of refrigeration oil unless evidence of leakage is found or whenever the following component parts are replaced.

COMPONENT PART TO BE REPLACED AMOUNT OF OIL TO BE ADDED

EVAPORATOR 50 cc
COMPRESSOR SEE BELOW

a) Perform the oil return procedure if the system is capable of operation. If the system is not capable of operation, proceed to Step b.
h) After discharging the system, remove the failed compressor or evaporator according to the procedure given in the applicable Subaru Service Manual.

c) COMPRESSOR - When replacing a failed compressor, the amount of refrigeration oil in the failed unit must be drained and measured. Rotate the compressor clutch (if possible) to ensure that all of the oil is removed.

The following chart indicates the amount of oil needed in the replacement compressor:

COLLECTED AMOUNT CHARGING AMOUNT

MORE THAN 70 cc SAME AS THE COLLECTED AMOUNT
LESS THAN 70 cc 70 cc

Since all Hitachi replacement compressors contain 150 cc of refrigeration oil, it will be necessary to drain some oil from the replacement compressor so that the above requirements are met.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD MORE THAN 80 cc OF REFRIGERATION OIL BE DRAINED FROM A REPLACEMENT COMPRESSOR.

2. LONE STAR SYSTEM - SOA 203 080, SOA 203 081, SOA 203 082, SOA 203 083.

SYSTEM OIL SPECIFICATIONS

SOA 203 083 - 150 cc (SUNISO 5GS) DIESEL KIKI COMPRESSOR
SOA 203 082 - 175 cc (SUNISO 5GS) SANKYO COMPRESSOR
SOA 203 081 - 175 cc (SUNISO 5GS) SANKYO COMPRESSOR
SOA 203 080 - 175 cc (SUNISO 5GS) SANKYO COMPRESSOR

The above systems do not require addition of refrigeration oil unless evidence of leakage is found or whenever the following components are replaced.

COMPONENT PART TO BE REPLACED AMOUNT OF OIL TO BE ADDED

EVAPORATOR 50 cc
CONDENSER 30 cc
RECEIVER-DRIER 30 cc
COMPRESSOR SEE BELOW

SOA 203 083 (DIESEL KIKI COMPRESSOR)

a) Perform the oil return procedure if the system is capable of operation. If the system is not capable of operation, proceed to Step b.
b) After discharging the system, remove the failed compressor.

c) Remove the oil drain plug from the back of the compressor. Drain the oil and measure it. Rotate the compressor clutch (if possible) to ensure that all of the oil is removed. The following chart indicates the amount of oil needed in the replacement compressor.

COLLECTED AMOUNT CHARGING AMOUNT

MORE THAN 70 cc SAME AS THE COLLECTED AMOUNT
LESS THAN 70 cc 90 cc

Since Diesel - Kiki replacement compressors contain 150 cc of refrigeration oil, it will be necessary to drain some oil from the replacement compressor so that the above requirements are met.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD MORE THAN 80 cc OF REFRIGERATION OIL BE DRAINED FROM A REPLACEMENT COMPRESSOR.

SOA 203 082, SOA 203 081, or SOA 203 080 (SANKYO COMPRESSOR)

a) Perform the oil return procedure if the system is capable of operation. If the system is not capable of operation, proceed to Step b.

b) After discharging the system, remove the failed compressor.

c) Remove the oil fill plug from the top of the compressor. Drain the oil and measure it. Rotate the compressor clutch (if possible) to ensure that all of the oil is removed. The following chart indicates the amount of oil needed in the replacement compressor.

COLLECTED AMOUNT CHARGING AMOUNT

MORE THAN 80 cc SAME AS THE COLLECTED AMOUNT
LESS THAN 80 cc 100 cc

Since Sankyo replacement compressors contain 175 cc of refrigeration oil, it will be necessary to drain some oil from the replacement compressor so that the above requirements are met.

UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES SHOULD MORE THAN 95 cc OF REFRIGERATION OIL BE DRAINED FROM A REPLACEMENT COMPRESSOR.
