CVJ Boot - Replacement Procedures

SUBJECT: CVJ BOOT REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES
When servicing a Front Axle CVJ Boot it is NOT necessary to completely disassemble the axle from the outer bearing housing as described in the Subaru Service Manual..
The following procedures describe the proper method of Front CVJ Boot replacement.
I. REMOVAL
1) To replace the CVJ Boot, it is necessary to remove the DOJ from the axle. Follow the instructions outlined in Service Bulletin Number 03-28-81 dated 11-12-81 for proper removal of the DOJ.
2) Remove both boot bands from the CVJ Boot with a pair of wire cutters.
3) Slide damaged boot off of axle.
4) Using solvent and a brush, clean the axle shaft and joint. Use low pressure compressed air to dry out joint
5) Apply 20 to 30 grams (0.7 to 1.0 oz) of grease (part number 623 029 980) Molytex Number 2 to the joint.
6) Apply 20 to 30 grams (0.7 to 1.0 oz) of grease (part number 623 029 980) to the boot interior. Clean the band grooves on the boot if they are stained with grease or other substance.
II. INSTALLATION
1) Slide on the large band, then install the boot, then slide the small band onto the axle.
2) Secure both bands properly.
3) Reinstall the DOJ onto the axle as described in Service Bulletin number 03-28-81 dated 11-12-81.
