APPLICABILITY: ALL 1977 THROUGH 1984 VEHICLES
SUBJECT: SUBARU MAINTENANCE FREE BATTERY
The Subaru Maintenance Free Battery, SOA 538000, can be installed in all 1977 Stage II through 1984 Subaru vehicles as a replacement battery.
FIGURE 1:
Battery hold-down bracket SOA 538001 (see Figure 1) will be required for most vehicles to secure the replacement battery.
FIGURE 2:
A short "J" bolt is included with the hold down for vehicles with high fender wall brackets. (See Figure 2).

To determine whether hold-down bracket SOA 538001 is required for your vehicle see figure 3.
FIGURE 4:
Please be advised that some 1983 Turbo 4WD vehicles will also require replacement of the battery tray with Subaru P/N 782 122 000 when installing an SOA 538000 Maintenance Free Battery.
See Figure 4 to determine if battery tray replacement is necessary.
NOTE: From the beginning of the 1984 model year, manual transmission equipped vehicles use a battery which is approximately one (1) inch shorter in length than automatic transmission equipped vehicles. This change in length does not affect any of the preceding application information as the width of the battery remains the same.
