SUBJECT: BRAKING EFFECT AND NOISE ON 4WD AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION VEHICLES WHEN MAKING SHARP TURNS ON PAVEMENT WITH 4WD ENGAGED

Please be advised that the Subaru 4WD automatic transmission vehicle is not designed as a full-time 4WD nor is it designed to operate in 4WD on pavement when sharp cornering is experienced as indicated on pages 57 and 58 of the 1983 model year owner's manual.

If operated in 4WD on pavement, you will experience a braking effect and noise when making sharp turns. Fuji and Subaru of America consider this noise and braking effect on sharp turns to be a normal due to transfer clutch slippage (refer to paragraph 2 on page 7-14 of the 1983 model service manual) and tire scrubbing. Transfer clutch slippage must occur due to the difference in turning radius between the front and rear wheels because the Subaru 4WD operates with full-time locked hubs.
