RECALL CERTIFICATION/REPAIR ORDER FORM

RECALL CAMPAIGN HCC-33 REPAIR PROCEDURE

Affected Vehicles:
1982 through 1984 Model Year Subaru equipped with factory installed Hitachi Cruise Control System and are either Turbo charged models or Non-Turbo charged models equipped with a Hitachi carburetor.

NOTE:
IF THE VEHICLE IS AN EQUIPPED WITH A HITACHI CARBURETOR AND A LINE. INSTALLED CRUISE CONTROL FOLLOW PROCEDURE A.

IF THE VEHICLE IS A TURBO CHARGED MODEL FOLLOW PROCEDURE B.

PROCEDURE A

(HITACHI CARBURETOR VEHICLES)

(I) Inspection:





1) Check the driver's door "B" pillar for the presence of an HCC-33 Recall Completion sticker (See Figure 4). If the sticker is present then no action is required. If the sticker is not present then proceed to Step 2.





2) Check the inner part of the accelerator cable between the cable housing and the carburetor for fraying. Check the cable housing end at the carburetor for a slot worn into the threaded area of the assembly (See Figure 1).

3) If none of the above conditions are apparent continue to section (II) for cable adjustment.

4) If either conditions in step (2) are present proceed to section (III) of procedure A.

(II) Adjustment:





1) Using the template provided (P/N SPS 065 300) check the angle of the accelerator cable bracket (See Figure 2).

2) If the angle is incorrect, according to the illustration above, the bracket must be repositioned to its specified location.

CAUTION:
A) USE THE UPPER PART OF THE BRACKET, NOT THE CABLE OR CABLE END FOR ADJUSTMENT, TO PREVENT DAMAGE TO THE ASSEMBLY.
B) WRAP THE BRACKET WITH CLOTH IN ORDER NOT TO DAMAGE THE BRACKET.

3) After adjusting the bracket check the cable slack and adjust it if necessary.

4) Should the cable need adjustment, follow instructions A-F below:

A) Remove the air cleaner cover.





B) Hold the choke valve in the full open position (See Figure 3).

C) Pull the throttle cable until you hear the low idle cam click into the low idle position.

D) Using the two adjusting nuts on the throttle cable, tighten or loosen the cable until it has 0.6 in. to 0.8 in. of slack. (See Figure 3).

E) After cable adjustment has been performed, check to ensure the throttle is wide open when the accelerator is fully depressed and that the engine returns to idle when the throttle is released.

F) Properly fill out the recall completion sticker and attach it to the drivers door "B" pillar (See Figure 4).

(III) Replacement:

1) Should you find the conditions mentioned in STEP 2 of SECTION (I), the accelerator cable must be replaced with a modified one (P/N SPS 065 311)

2) After cable replacement is performed, it is necessary to check cable adjustment and bracket angle as specified in section (II).





3) Properly fill out the recall completion sticker and attach it to the driver's door "B" pillar (See Figure 4).

THE REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE IS WARRANTABLE UNDER OPERATION # 149-331 AND ALLOWS 0.7 HRS. FAILURE CODE SFC-77.

PROCEDURE B

(TURBO VEHICLE)

Inspection:

1) Check the driver's door "B" pillar for the presence of an HCC-33 recall completion sticker (See Figure 4). If the sticker is present then no action is required. If the sticker is not present then proceed to Step 2.





2) Check the position of the protective sleeves at location A and B of the accelerator cable. (See Figure 5). If the sleeves are in position proceed to Step 3. If the sleeves are out of position proceed to Step 4.

3) Install a securing clamp (P/N SPS 053 160) at locations A and B as illustrated in Figure 5.

4) REPLACEMENT is necessary. Use a modified cable (P/N SPS 065 311), while keeping in mind the precautions listed below.

A) Do not kink the cable at positions "A" or "B" (See Figure 5) of the accelerator cable.

B) Do not twist the cable.





C) Tighten the nut at "A" position on the link assembly. Positioning it 0.4 in. from the cable end. (See Figure 6).

5) Properly fill out the recall completion sticker and attach it to the driver's door "B" pillar. (See Figure 4).


THE REPLACEMENT OPERATION IS WARRANTABLE UNDER OPERATION # 149-331 AND ALLOWS 0.7 HRS. FAILURE CODE SFC-77.
