A/C Drive Belt - Service Procedures
NUMBER 10-41-85
APPLICABILITY ALL MATSUSHITA A/C EQUIPPED VEHICLES DATE 09-16-85
SUBJECT: DRIVE BELT SERVICE PROCEDURES
When performing service work on Matsushita A/C systems, please be aware that proper fan belt tension is critical to proper operation. This is especially true of power steering equipped vehicles where compressor belt wrap-around is less than on non-power steering vehicles.
FIGURE 1 - Matsushita Pulley Arrangement:
In addition to the adjustment procedure found in Section 4-7 of the Subaru Station Wagon and Sedan Service Manual Supplement, a standard belt tension gauge (such as Borroughs BT-33-73F available through Kent-Moore under J-23600-B), can also be used to check belt tension. The belt tension gauge must be used only on the section of the belt indicated by the arrows in Figure 1 below.
Figures in parentheses refer to the number of grooves in pulleys.
C/P : Crankshaft pulley P/S : Power steering oil pump pulley
W/P : Water pump pulley A/C : Air conditioner compressor pulley
ALT : Alternator pulley I/P : Idler pulley
The belt tension specification for new belts should be between 110-130 lbs. when checked with a belt tension gauge. Used belt tension specification is 90-110 lbs.
Before replacing any Panasonic compressor which is suspected of seizing or failure of any kind, the belt tension should always be checked first to ensure that a loose drive belt is not the cause of the problem. If the belt shows signs of glazing or wear due to slippage, install a new belt.
1986 Matsushita A/C equipped vehicles will incorporate revised compressor mounting brackets. As viewed from the front of the vehicle, the revised mounting brackets will move the compressor approximately 8 mm to the right and 14 mm upward.
1985 Matsushita A/C equipped vehicles use a one piece compressor mounting bracket. 1986 Matsushita A/C equipped vehicles will utilize two-piece compressor mounting brackets and will require the use of different, (longer) drive belts for both the compressor and alternator.
The charts below lists part numbers for 1985 and 1986 Matsushita compressor mounting brackets and corresponding drive belts.
