Trunk Torsion Spring - Service Tool

APPLICABILITY: 1985 4-DOOR SEDAN
SUBJECT: TORSION SPRING TOOL
Please be aware that the required Subaru special torsion spring tool is available through normal parts channels under Part Number SOA 443F400.
This tool must be used to service the trunk torsion springs for normal R&R procedures and may also be used when installing fulcrum extensions along with Subaru's optional rear deck rack.
The procedure for use of the torsion spring tool is included with every tool and is reprinted below.

PROCEDURE FOR USE OF SPECIAL TORSION SPRING TOOL
NOTE: When using tool on vehicles equipped with rear speakers and trunk light, PRECAUTION must be exercised to avoid damage to speaker wire leads, trunk light switch and switch leads. This can be accomplished by disconnecting leads as necessary and moving them out of working area. To Remove Torsion Springs
1. Prop deck lid to hold in open position. Refer to Figure #1.

2. Place tool guide (Figure #2, Item A) over spring to be removed as shown in Figure #3.
3. Move tool as close as possible toward spring anchor, allowing sufficient clearance for tool handle to clear fender housing.

4. Push tool handle toward front of vehicle until fulcrum can be released from spring loop. Refer to Figures #3 and #4, Item B.
5. Partially release pressure on tool handle to relieve spring tension approximately 1-1/2 inch.
6. Grasp spring with freehand (Refer to Figure #3) while continuing to hold tension on tool handle.
7. While continuing to hold tension on tool handle, pull spring down with freehand (Refer to Figure #3) towards floor of trunk to release from anchor.
8. Slowly release tension on tool handle until spring is relaxed.
9. To remove opposite spring, repeat same procedure.
10. To reinstall springs reverse procedure.

To Install Fulcrum Extension
NOTE: Refer to previous PRECAUTION.
1. Prop deck lid to hold in open position. Refer to Figure #1.

2. Place tool guide (Figure #2, Item A) over spring to be torqued.
3. Move tool as close as possible toward spring anchor, allowing sufficient clearance for tool handle to clear wheel well housing.

4. Push tool handle toward front of vehicle only as required to release fulcrum tangs from spring loop. Refer to Figure #4.

5. While holding the torsion spring, lower the fulcrum and place fulcrum extension over the existing fulcrum. Refer to Figure #5.

6. Re-align fulcrum tangs with torsion spring loop and slowly release spring torque. Refer to Figure #4.
7. Repeat procedure for opposite side.
8. Installation complete.
