Catalytic Converter Shield - Rattles

ALL 1985 & 1986 NON-TURBO SUBARU VEHICLE DATE 02-04-86


SUBJECT: FRONT CATALYST SHIELD REPLACEMENT


Should the front catalytic converter shield need replacing due to rattling, replacement shields are available under the following part numbers:

All MPI and SPI Non-Turbo X4401GA110
Vehicles

All Federal 4WD Non-Turbo X4401GA120
Vehicles


In order to install a catalytic replacement shield:

1) Disconnect the O2 Sensor lead, if equipped.

NOTE: Do not remove O2 Sensor

2) Lift the vehicle off of the ground and ensure that it is secure.
3) Remove the complete front catalyst pipe from the vehicle according to Section 2-9, Page 4, of the 1985 or 1986 Subaru Service Manual.

4) Using a hardened 3/8" drill bit, remove the upper and lower catalytic converter shields by drilling out the seven spot welds. (See Figure 1).
5) Install the upper and lower replacement shields onto the catalytic converter.
6) Install the proper size flange bolts through the upper catalyst shield with the self locking nuts installed on the bottom.

7) Tighten the seven flange bolts to their specified torque. (See Figure 2).
8) Ensure the catalyst shields do not rattle by tapping it with a rubber mallet.
9) With the two (2) exhaust gaskets supplied, install the front catalyst pipe onto the vehicle according to Section 2-9, Page 4 of the 1985 or 1986 Service Manual, after confirming that it is noise-free.
10) Lower the vehicle.
11) Reconnect the O2 Sensor wire.
12) Run the vehicle to ensure that the exhaust system has no leaks or rattles.


The Flat Rate allowance under the 12 Month Unlimited Mileage Warranty is 0.5 Hrs. using Operation # A 112-921 (Failure Code EAA-48)
