Section C: Impact Punch Test

1. Clean any undercoating, rust, mud, etc. from the areas indicated by an "Arrow" as shown in the Figure 1, so the impact tester will make proper contact in the test areas. Put 2 marks on each inner arm. (Total: 4 locations).

NOTE:
The rear stabilizer bar (for XT only) must be removed prior to performing the punch test.

2. Wearing goggles and a mask, punch test each marked area.

CAUTIONS!

A) Use only the Subaru impact punch tester (P/N SAC00SR001).

B) Never leave the tester in the charged position. It is dangerous from a safety stand point, and will result in spring fatigue overtime.

C) Never release a charged tester for any purpose other than its original purpose. It is dangerous and will decrease the life of the tester. Application of the tester should be limited to use on inner arms only.

D) The punching tip must be held exactly perpendicular and firmly to the surface being tested to ensure accurate testing.





PUNCH TESTER USE

3. After sliding the trigger pipe toward the punching tip, turn the trigger pipe counterclockwise so that the lock pin goes in the groove on the trigger pipe.

4. Pull the trigger pipe back against the resisting force of the spring, and after sliding d to the lock pin set position properly, turn it counterclockwise to engage the lock pin in the groove at that position.

5. Press the tip of the impact tester against the marked position of the inner arm so that it is perpendicular to the surface.

6. Hold the punching tip firmly against the arm and turn the trigger pipe clockwise to release the lock pin, letting the punching tip strike the arm surface.

7. Determine d the impact tester penetrated the arm by inserting a steel wire such as a standard paper clip into each punched point.

8. Judgement of Repairs Necessary

A) IF THE IMPACT TEST DID NOT PENETRATE ANY OF THE TEST POINTS, PROCEED TO SECTION D.

B) IF THE IMPACT TEST DID PENETRATE AND/OR DENT ANY OF THE TEST POINTS IN EITHER SIDE OF THE INNER ARM, PROCEED TO SECTION E.
