Fuel Flap - Does Not Open

EXCEPT HATCHBACK AND BRAT MODELS

SUBJECT: FUEL FLAP NOT OPENING

If you encounter a customer complaint of the fuel flap not opening, the following items should be checked for failure:

^ Fuel flap spring weak or missing, replace the spring.
^ Release cable stretched or broken, adjust or replace the cable, as needed following the 1986 Subaru Service Manual, section 5-1, pages 49 and 50.
^ The push rod does not retract far enough for the fuel flap to open, perform the following steps below:

TOOLS REQUIRED

A single edge razor blade or razor knife. A plastic card.

PROCEDURE

Step 1) With the assistance of another person open the fuel flap by operating the interior lever. Then use a plastic card to push the rod in to release the fuel door.

Step 2) Using a single edge razor or razor knife carefully trim 1/32" off the tip of the push rod. See Figure 1.
Step 3) If necessary trim up to a total of 1/16" to ensure the fuel flap operates properly.

NOTE: DO NOT CUT OFF MORE THAN 1/16" OR CABLE REPLACEMENT WILL BE NECESSARY.
