THIS BULLETIN SUPERSEDES AND CANCELS SERVICE BULLETIN NUMBER 07-33-87 DATED 03-23-87
Customer driving habits may be the contributing cause of an intermittent ECS light with a trouble code of 46. First you must ensure that part number 83241GA000, Park-Neutral Switch assembly is working properly. Perform all of the tests listed in the trouble code 46 repair diagram found in "Manuals, Fuel Injection, Computer Engine Controls Single Point F.I. System". If no problems are found in the system, the following conditions may cause the ECS light to illuminate:
Case 1: Shift to drive from park or neutral position within 1.28 seconds after start-up with engine temperature of 158~ F or higher and with an engine speed of 1500 RPM or greater for three minutes.
Example: A customer who starts a warm vehicle and shifts into gear extremely fast and drives nonstop for three minutes.
Case 2: With the shifter staying in park or neutral after start-up, engine temperature of 158~ F or higher and with an engine speed of 1500 RPM or greater for three minutes.
Example: Customer starts an already warm vehicle and revs the engine above 1500 RPM for three minutes before selecting a gear.
NOTE: IF ANY OF THE CONDITIONS IN CASE 1 OR CASE 2 ARE MET UNDER NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS, AN ECS LIGHT ILLUMINATION IS NORMAL.
If customer complaints persist regarding the ECS illuminations after an explanation of normal control unit operation is given, replace the control unit with part number 22611AA103.
