Speedometer Cable - Ticking Noise

SUBJECT: SPEEDOMETER CABLE NOISE


A ticking noise in the speedometer unit maybe caused by instability the speedometer cable.

This condition can be repaired by installing a bushing on the speedometer cable core.


NOTE: Don't use this repair for speedometer cables
^ twisted or kinked, ^ casing worn
^ or when a lack of lubrication is present.

Installation instructions:

1 Bushing 37428GA000

MATERIALS REQUIRED

Anaerobic glue. Examples: Super Glue*, Krazy Glue*, etc. (*Trade Marks).
NOTE: The glue must work with metal and plastic, check the label.

TOOLS REQUIRED

17 mm Open-end Wrench Needle Nose Pliers


STEP 1) Remove the spare tire assembly.

STEP 2) Locate the speedometer cable transmission connection. (See Figure 1). Use a 17 mm open end wrench, and remove the cable from the transmission. Do not remove the cable from the dash connection.

STEP 3) Use needle nose pliers to remove the speedometer cable inner core from the casing, then remove the washer. (See Figure 2).

STEP 4) Slide the bushing on the inner cable core. The bushing chamfer must be in the correct direction. (see Figure 3).

STEP 5) Clean the cable tongue and apply anaerobic glue to the stop before the tongue (See Figure 4). Install the bushing on the glue area and allow sixty seconds to dry. Do not add additional grease. Put the washer back on the cable and install the core in the casing by spinning the tongue by hand to seat the cable in speedometer assembly.

NOTE: The glue contact area must be clean and grease-free. Avoid spilling glue on the core, tongue, and casing of the speedometer cable. Make sure the bushing is secured to the cable or the same problem will occur.

STEP 6) Reinstall the cable to the transmission. Be sure to insert the tongue of the cable into the groove of the speedometer gear shaft or damage may occur to the plastic threads of the casing. (See Figure 4).
This procedure can be claimed for vehicles within the terms of the Subaru warranty using operation # A849-201, and Flat Rate Time of 0.4 hours. Failure Code SCW-48
