SUBJECT: UPSHIFT CONTROL SYSTEM FOR AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS (KDLH)
Some Automatic Transmission models from 1981 to the present have an "upshift control system" or kickdown low hold (KDLH). The 1987 Owner's Manual insert pertaining to the "upshift control system" is incorrect. The correct explanation is as follows:
"Automatic Transmission vehicles are equipped with an upshift control system in order to meet applicable EPA emission control standards. After a cold start, that system may prevent the transmission from upshifting from first to second gear for approximately up to one minute or until vehicle speed reaches approximately 40 km/H (25 MPH), whichever occurs first. This characteristics is normal. Routine shifting can be obtained by warming up the engine before starting out."
NOTE: THIS EXPLANATION APPLIES TO ALL MODELS WITH THE KDLH SYSTEM.
