Evaporative Emissions - Rattle Noise
86subaru1NUMBER 02-47-86
APPLICABILITY: 1986 SINGLE POINT INJECTION VEHICLES DATE 05-07-86
SUBJECT: RATTLING NOISE IN LEFT ROCKER PANEL
Be advised that a complaint of a rattling noise in the left rocker panel of an SPI vehicle which occurs immediately after engine start-up, could be caused by fuel vapor pulsations in the fuel return pipe.
This condition can be corrected by installation of a fuel damper in the vapor return hose. Installation instructions follow:
PARTS REQUIRED:
QUANTITY PART NAME PART NUMBER
1 Fuel Damper 42024GA080
2 Hose Clamp 742038300
TOOLS REQUIRED:
Phillips Screwdriver 10 mm Wrench
Diagonal Cutters Safety Glasses
Marking Crayon Tape Measure
1. Verify noise. Relieve fuel pressure by disconnecting the fuel pump wiring connector which is found in the right rear, under the vehicle next to the fuel pump. Run the engine until it stops. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
FIGURE 1 - MEASUREMENT SPECIFICATIONS:
2. Locate the fuel vapor return hose found on the upper left side of the throttle body assembly. Measure to a point 4 inches from the hose connection and mark it. Measure from the mark 1 inch and mark it. Place a rag under the return hose to collect any remaining fuel and cut at both marks. (See Figure 1).
FIGURE 2:
3. Install the damper in the hose in the space cut out using two hose clamps. Angle the damper 90~ from the damper in the fuel inlet side, with the housing facing the firewall. (See Figure 2).
4. Make sure the hose clamps are tight. Reconnect the fuel pump wiring. Reconnect the negative battery cable. Start engine and check for tightness of all connections and clearance between the damper, clamps, and other engine components.
This procedure can be claimed for vehicles within the terms of the Subaru Warranty using Operation #A-146211, Flat Rate Time of 0.4 Hrs. and Failure Code DDB-48.
Note: This damper has been installed in production as of April, 1986, beginning with the following VIN's:
