SUBJECT: STEERING COLUMN NOISE
If you encounter a vehicle that appears to exhibit a knocking type noise coming from the steering column area when the steering wheel is turned from lock to lock, incorrect thrust clearance between steering column bearings and bushings may be the cause. Use the following procedures for removal, disassembly and installation of modified steering column shaft bearings and bushings.

Note: The Bearing and Bushing Assemblies are no longer available as separate parts.
USING THE 1988 SUBARU SERVICE MANUAL SECTION 4 & 5 PUBLICATION NUMBER G139BE FOR 4-DOOR SEDAN, STATION WAGON AND 3-DOOR COUPE MODELS AS A GUIDE TO PERFORM THE FOLLOWING OPERATIONS.
1. Section 4-3, pages 14, 22 and 29, inspect the steering column universal joint and the steering rack assembly for looseness or wear, repair if necessary.
2. After ensuring proper operation of universal joint and steering rack assembly remove the steering column according to section 4-3 pages 13 and 14 for rigid type and pages 17 and 18 for tilt type.
3. Disassemble, inspect and install the new bearings, bushings and column housing according to section 4-3 pages 14 and 15 for rigid type and pages 18 to 26 for tilt type.
4. Reinstall the steering column according to section 4-3 pages 16 and 17 for rigid type and page 26 for tilt type.
5. Ensure proper operation of steering column and components. If a noise is still present repeat this procedure.
