Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Section D: Rustproof Treatment

1. Mark the inner arms (Locations C & D) as shown on both sides. (Figure 3).

IMPORTANT:
If you are performing this treatment after replacing parts as specified under Section E, it is only necessary to rustproof the remaining original components. Replacement parts for this campaign have already been treated.

2. Wearing goggles and a mask, center punch and drill all four (4) marked locations with a 4 mm diameter drill bit.

NOTE:
A sharp drill bit and an occasional application of oil to the bit will aid in the drilling process.

A) Metal fillings from drilling may be hot. Gloves are recommended.

3. Widen point D, using a 10 mm diameter drill bit. (Refer to Note and Cautions above.)

NOTE:
File off any burrs caused by drilling.

4. Place a cloth, shop rag, etc. around the backing plate to protect the brake parts from seepage of the rust-proof oil. (Figure 4)

5. Prepare for spraying of rust-proofing oil.

CAUTIONS!

A) Wear goggles and a mask.

B) Keep spray away from flames or sparks. (Refer to the material safety data information on the label.)

C) Some overspraying may result, depending on experience. Should overspray get on vehicles or equipment in the area, clean affected areas off with a solvent that will not damage painted surfaces.

D) Adjust spray gun regulator to 85 psi.

E) Test sprayer by spraying in a pan first.

F) Oil will drip out of the holes drilled. Place pan under these areas.

G) Move the "L" shaped nozzle in a circular, up and down motion to ensure that oil completely covers the inside of the arm.

H) Pull the trigger of the spray gun completely.

6. Spray the rust-proof oil for 5 seconds inside each inner arm (approximately 1/6 of can). Confirm that the oil drips from the openings at both ends of the arms.

NOTE:
SPRAYING TIMES ARE ESTIMATES ONLY AND MAY BE ADJUSTED SLIGHTLY ACCORDING TO THE AMBIENT TEMPERATURE AND PREVIOUS APPLICATION EXPERIENCE. GENERALLY, THE APPLICATION TIMES WILL BE LESS IN WARMER TEMPERATURES.

7. Save any remaining oil, clean out the spray gun and nozzle. After cleaning, fill the spray gun tank with rust-proof wax.

8. Clean as best as possible, all outer areas of the inner arms to be treated.

9. Adhering to the same precautions under application of the oil, spray rust-proof wax on the insides of the inner arms about 45 seconds each. Confirm that wax drips from the openings at both ends of the arms by using paper or finger.

NOTE:
PRIOR TO WAX APPLICATION, SPRAY WAX ON A PIECE OF PAPER FROM A DISTANCE OF 12 INCHES AND VERIFY THAT THE SPRAY PATTERN IS MORE THAN 5 INCHES IN DIAMETER.

NOTE:
TOTAL QUANTITY OF OIL USED FOR TREATMENT OF BOTH INNER ARMS = 1/6 CAN.

10. Fill the 4 mm hole (Point C) with sealant.

11. Apply sealant to the openings, at both ends of the arms (indicated by Black Arrow) as shown below in Figure 5 (a quantity about the size of a 1" ball.) DO NOT apply sealant to the openings on the underside of the outer end (indicated by White Arrow) as this will serve as a drain hole.

12. Apply the plug kits to the 10 mm holes at Point D on each arm. (Figure 3)

NOTE:
IF THE PLUG ROTATES WHILE TIGHTENING THE SCREW, HOLD THE OUTSIDE OF THE PLUG WITH PLIERS.

13. Now apply the rust-proof wax evenly to the outside of both inner arms. (Spraying time for the inner arms is about 30 seconds each.)

NOTE:
TOTAL QUANTITY OF WAX USED FOR TREATMENT OF BOTH INNER ARMS = 1/2 CAN.

14. Clean out the spray gun, tank, and wand.

15. Clean any overspray from the backing plate and/or other surfaces not included in treatment.

16. Re-install and torque rear wheel assemblies in their original positions.
