1987 XT SERVICE MANUAL CORRECTIONS
THIS BULLETIN IS FOR INFORMATION ONLY
The following corrections need to be made to the 1987 XT Subaru Service Manual (Red and White), Section 3-2 Automatic Transmission and Differential.
FIGURE 1:
^ Page 26, figure 41 below the control valve heading shows the upper valve body section with the valving sequence. Items 21, the lockup control valve, 22 lockup control plug and the spring location are improperly sequenced. Also item 17 is shown incorrectly under the heading Lower Valve Body. See figure 1, attached, showing the correct sequences.
FIGURE 2:
^ Page 27, figure 44 under the heading Valve Body Configuration, showing the upper valve body. The lock-up control valve and the pressure modifier valve spring location are incorrect. See figure 2, attached, showing the correct illustration.
FIGURE 3:
^ Page 28, figure 46 shows the lower valve body and the strainer location. The location of the orifice valve is missing. See figure 3 attached. The orifice location should also be added to page 109, figure 174.
FIGURE 4:
^ Page 69, figure 93 titled "Operation of Each Gearshift Member", the chart shows the overrunning clutch as being engaged when the selector lever is in the 3 range and the transmission is shifting from 1st to 2nd gear. The overrunning clutch is not engaged at the shift points above. See figure 4 attached, showing the corrected chart.
FIGURE 5:
^ Page 72, Under the heading "operating condition of parts", on the left side, the words High clutch should be replaced by Band brake. See figure 5, attached, showing the corrected chart.
FIGURE 6:
^ Page 74, Under the heading "operating condition of parts", on the upper left hand corner, the words "High clutch: applied" is missing. See figure 6, attached, showing the corrected chart.
FIGURE 7:
^ Page 83, see the chart showing the parts, part numbers, dimensions and applications of the 4 EAT. Item number 16, Drive Pinion Shim, is missing. See figure 7, attached, showing the corrected chart.
FIGURE 8:
^ Page 84, figure 103, under the heading "Location and Installing Direction of Thrust Needle Bearing and Washer", illustration (A) is shown incorrectly. Illustration (A) should be identical to illustration (E). See figure 8, attached, for the corrected illustration.
FIGURE 9:
^ Page 88, figure 107, pictured is item number 43, the selector linkage detent spring, but item 43 is not listed in the description column. Also there are two item 42's. The one shown in the upper right is the correct item #42 (shim). The part shown as item 42, in the lower left is the T.R.F. Pipe which should be item 44. See figure 9 attached.
^ Page 89, figure 108, the figure heading should read "Control Valve and Harness Routing" not louting.
^ Page 113 under the heading "Assembly", at the bottom left hand corner, delete "900 QL" and add Wrench (499787100).
^ Page 114, top left, the formula for Drive Pinion Shim thickness is shown incorrectly, it should be as follows:
t = 6.5 mm +/- 0.32 mm - (B-A)
^ Page 138, figure 271, lower left hand caption. The measurement figures should read 15 + 35 mm (0.59 + 1.38 in.). Also item number (3) "Calculation Equation" is incorrect. The correct calculation equation is T = (L + 0.4) - (l-35mm) - (0.5 to 0.25).
^ Page 146, figure 276, Electric Circuit. This is an engineering illustration of how the automatic transmission control unit (TCU) operates in theory. This illustration should not be used for electrical wiring diagnosis. Refer to section 6-3, page 87, figure 44 for the automatic transmission control system wiring diagram.
FIGURE 10:
FIGURE 10 PART 2:
^ Pages 148 and 149, item 3, "Troubleshooting Chart", the symptom at the bottom of page 148 should include the 2nd symptom down from the top of page 149. See figure 10, attached, for both charts corrected.
^ Page 153, top left side, "Adjustment of the Adjusting Screw" Item 2. The adjustment procedure is incorrectly stated. The correct procedure is: tighten adjust screw to 9 N-m (0.9kg-m, 6.5ft.lbs.) torque, then back off three turns.
^ Page 155, Item (1) Stall Test, "Purpose of the Stall Test": 1) To check the operation of the automatic transmission clutch and brake band, delete brake band. The band operation should not be included in a stall test.
FIGURE 11:
^ Page 158, the chart for standard line pressure shows the numerical figures but does not give the units of measure. See figure attached, for proper units of measure.
^ Pages 56 and 57, figures 72 and 75 under "Shift Characteristics" also pages 159 through 165 "Road Test" shift characteristics are correct but please note: when road testing the vehicle for transmission diagnosis, use the charts listed on the pages above as theoretical guides only. Never exceed the posted legal speed limit.
