Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Recall - Owners Manual Insert

NUMBER: VVZY-37
DATE: May 23, 1988

APPLICABILITY:
1988MY SUBARU VEHICLES ALLOCATED FROM BOAT SHIPMENTS THROUGH # 356 CATTLEYA ACE.

SUBJECT:
OWNER'S MANUAL CORRECTION

Subaru has determined that a non-compliance with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 210 Seat Belt Assembly Anchorages exists in the Owner's Manuals of some 1988MY Subaru Vehicles.

The Owner's Manuals do not contain certain required information regarding the installation and use of child restraint systems.

In order to correct this situation, adhesive backed inserts have been prepared for insertion into the owners manuals. The inserts for each type of owner's manual vary and placement instructions are found on the top of each insert.

Due to the complexities of this recall campaign, implementation will occur in two phases.

Phase I will cover all affected vehicles that have been sold through May 16, 1988.

Phase II will cover all affected vehicles that are sold from May 17, 1988 through July 7, 1988 and all affected vehicles in inventory as of July 7, 1988.

Vehicles Involved

All 1988MY Subaru vehicles allocated from boat shipments through # 356, Cattleya Ace, are involved in this campaign. All vehicles received after boat # 356 will have owner's manuals that do not require correction.

Involved vehicles have been identified by Vehicle Identification Number Computer Listings. Computer listings contain the complete Vehicle Identification Number, owner name and address data, and are furnished to the dealers with this bulletin. Owner name and address data furnished will enable dealers to follow-up with owners involved in this campaign.

These listings may contain owner names and addresses obtained from State Motor Vehicle Registration Records. The use of such motor vehicle registration data for any other purpose is a violation of law in several states. Accordingly, you are urged to limit the use of this listing to the follow-up necessary to complete this campaign. Any dealer not receiving a computer listing with this campaign bulletin has no involved vehicles currently assigned.

Owner Notification

SOA will prepare and mail an Owner Notification Letter to all owners of affected vehicles. The owner notification will include the appropriate insert for the owner to place into the Owner's Manual. A copy of the Owner Notification Letter is included in this campaign bulletin.

Phase I - The mailing will occur in June 1988.

Phase II - The mailing will occur in July 1988.

Dealer Campaign Responsibility

Phase I and Phase II - Assist any owner that requests help in updating his Owner's Manual at no charge.

Phase II - All owner's manuals of vehicles in inventory as listed in the Phase II computer printout must be corrected prior to sale or lease of the vehicle, according to the instructions presented in this bulletin.

Owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory, whose names are not listed on the Phase II computer printouts, must be contacted by the dealer and arrangements made to update the owner's manuals of those vehicles.
