This bulletin has been updated by TSB #105990, 7/6/90 (added to the end of this TSB). This bulletin is to be used as additional information for Section 4-7 of the 1985 to 1990 L Series and Loyale Genuine Subaru Service Manuals.
PANASONIC A/C TROUBLESHOOTING
Use the following manufacturer recommendations for diagnosing and servicing the thermoprotector.
THERMOPROTECTOR SERVICE PRECAUTION:
Never attempt to service the compressor thermoprotector without first completely discharging the A/C system. High side pressure is in contact with the thermoprotector internal surfaces. Removal without discharging the A/C system may cause an extreme safety hazard.
THERMOPROTECTOR DIAGNOSIS AND SERVICE PROCEDURE:
DIAGNOSIS
Check that continuity across thermoprotector circuit is open when temperature is greater than 330~ F, R = infinite Ohms.
REPLACEMENT PROCEDURES
1. Discharge A/C system.
Important Note:
Various R-12 reclamation procedures are currently being studied by the federal and state governments and acceptance of those procedures may result in a prohibition against the release of R-12 into the atmosphere. Venting R-12 into the atmosphere depletes the earth's ozone layer. For that reason, we strongly recommend use of a refrigerant reclamation station. If federal or state regulations are adopted prohibiting the discharge of R-12 into the atmosphere, a refrigerant reclamation station must be used.
2. Remove snap-ring and thermoprotector.
3. Clean sealing surfaces.
4. Lubricate new O-ring, replace thermoprotector and snap-ring.
5. Evacuate and recharge A/C system, refer to charging instructions.
6. Leak check during operation.

SUBJECT: THERMOPROTECTOR TESTING PROCEDURE CLARIFICATION
THIS BULLETIN IS TO BE USED AS AN ADDENDUM TO SERVICE BULLETIN 10-58-90 DATED 05-30-90
THERMOPROTECTOR DIAGNOSIS AND SERVICE PROCEDURE CLARIFICATION:
THERMOPROTECTOR FUNCTION (DEFINITION):
The thermoprotector and circuit is designed to open the compressor clutch circuit when the compressor head temperature reaches or exceeds 330~F.
THERMOPROTECTOR'S SERVICE PRECAUTION:
Never attempt to service the compressor's thermoprotector without first completely discharging the A/C system. High side pressure is in contact with the thermoprotector's internal surfaces. Removal without discharging the A/C system may cause an extreme safety hazard.
THERMOPROTECTOR TESTING:
The thermoprotector circuit must have continuity at temperatures below 330~F. The continuity test can be performed with the A/C system off, see Figure 1.
^ Locate the thermoprotector connector and disconnect the thermoprotector from the wiring harness.
^ Using a volt-ohmmeter or continuity test light, measure or test for continuity across the two thermoprotector wiring connector terminals
^ If the circuit is open or no continuity (ohmmeter shows infinity) the clutch will not engage the A/C system, the thermoprotector must be replaced.
Follow the replacement procedure in Service Bulletin 10-58-90 dated 05-30-90.
