Thermostatic Air Cleaner: Description and Operation

Thermostatic Air Cleaner:

PURPOSE
Controls the temperature of intake air, improving engine operation during warm-up and assisting in the stabilization of air-fuel ratio.

LOCATION
Air cleaner housing.

OPERATION
When intake air temperature is low, the temperature sensor closes and manifold vacuum activates the vacuum motor to open the air control valve, allowing warm air into the air cleaner. Concurrently, the idle compensator closes and air-fuel ratio is adjusted by the carburetor.

When intake air temperature is high, the temperature sensor opens and the vacuum motor is not affected by manifold vacuum. The air control valve remains closed so that outside air enters the air cleaner. Concurrently, the idle compensator opens allowing air into the intake system to prevent enrichment of the air-fuel ratio.
