Operation CHARM: Car repair manuals for everyone.

Performance

(1) Vehicle Set Up

In order to obtain meaningful test results, the vehicle must be set up to meet the following conditions:

--> VEHICLE IN SHADE

--> NO WIND

--> ALL VEHICLE DOORS CLOSED

--> FRONT WINDOWS OPEN

--> HOOD OPEN

--> ENGINE SPEED SET AT 1500 RPM (engine at operating temperature)

--> A/C ON

--> COOLING - MAXIMUM COLD

--> AIR SOURCE - RECIRCULATION (max)

--> BLOWER SPEED - 4TH POSITION (HIGH)

--> OPERATE A/C 10 MINUTES (MINIMUM)

BEFORE TAKING MEASUREMENTS

(2) Measurements

After 10 minutes (minimum) of A/C operation and using accurate test equipment, take the following measurements (in order):

1) EVAPORATOR INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE AT RECIRCULATION DOOR

2) EVAPORATOR DISCHARGE AIR TEMPERATURE AT CENTER VENT GRILL

3) CONDENSER (AMBIENT) INTAKE AIR TEMPERATURE MEASURED 3 FEET

IN FRONT AND IN LINE WITH THE CENTER OF THE CONDENSER
4) SUCTION (LOW) SIDE PRESSURE

5) DISCHARGE (HIGH) SIDE PRESSURE

Note: If only one thermometer is available: 1) take the ambient measurement first; then 2) the intake air; and 3) discharge air temperature.

(3) Measurements Verses Standards

Compare temperature and pressure measurements against the established standards shown in the following charts.

PERFORMANCE

(4) Temperature (evaporator performance)

First, measure the intake air temperature as close to the recirculation inlet as possible. Second, measure the discharge air temperature at the center vent outlet, then compare against chart: 1) bottom graph line for 30% humidity; 2) upper line for 90% humidity.

PERFORMANCE

(5) Pressure (refrigerant loop performance)

After 10 minutes of A/C operation, take the ambient temperature reading

3 feet in front of the condenser. Check gauge readings, then compare against chart; 1) lower graph line for 30% humidity; 2) upper line for

90% humidity.

PERFORMANCE

(7) Leak Testing

After completing the performance test, complete a system leak test. To obtain the best possible test results:

--> DISCHARGE (HIGH) SIDE PRESSURE SHOULD BE ABOVE 100 PSI
--> ENGINE OFF

--> NO WIND

--> DO NOT DISCONNECT GAUGES (R-12 CONTAMINATION)

--> WIPE OFF ALL CONNECTIONS/AREAS TO BE TESTED

--> CALIBRATE DETECTOR TO 1/2 OUNCE PER YEAR (EXCEPT SHAFT SEAL)

--> CALIBRATE AT 1 OUNCE PER YEAR FOR COMPRESSOR SHAFT SEAL
--> START LEAK TEST AT HIGH SIDE OF EVAPORATOR AND WORK TOWARDS

THE COMPRESSOR. START AT THE LOW SIDE OF THE COMPRESSOR AND BACK TO THE EVAPORATOR. CHECK THE LOWER PORTION OF EACH

FITTING BECAUSE THE REFRIGERANT GAS IS HEAVIER THAN AIR.
