SUBJECT:
LEGACY ENGINE OIL LEVEL CHECKING

Proper use of the engine oil level dipstick will ensure an accurate reading.

The most accurate reading will be obtained if the oil level is checked after the engine has been off for 2 to 3 hours. Thermal expansion may cause a reading above the full mark.

The dipstick enters the oil pan through a guide. The oil has a tendency to pool in the guide under the dipstick. Always insert the dipstick so that the symbol on the knob is right side up when viewed from the front of the engine.

The dipstick should be inserted slowly and removed slowly. Always read the oil level on the side of the dipstick with the embossed marks. The oil level will be higher on the other side.

Because of production tolerances, it is common for the oil level of a new vehicle to be up to 15 mm above full on the dipstick. This will not cause any problems.
