SUBJECT: ENGINE OIL PAN REMOVAL
This bulletin is for information only.
Use caution when removing the oil pan from Legacy engines to avoid damaging the block. The oil pan uses a fluid packing adhesive/sealant (Three Bond 1207C, P/N 004403012) in place of a gasket to seal the oil pan to the block. This seal must be broken to remove the oil pan. A gasket scraper or putty knife shaped tool can be used to perform the duties of the "oil pan cutter tool" described in the Legacy Service Manual 2-3, page 42 (W6A2).
To remove the oil pan, first remove the retaining bolts. Then, preferably using two tools, work them in between the oil pan and block mounting surface. Remove and repeat while prying as necessary, until the pan becomes free.
To avoid damaging the block be sure to:
1. Insert the tools flush with the block mounting surface to prevent them from digging in and gouging the block surface.
2. Avoid working in the sections of the engine where the block halves meet. This will prevent the possibility of hitting a stepped edge and damaging the block.
