Sunroof Water Leak Diagnosis

If you encounter a customer complaint of a sunroof water leak, before you do any testing get as much information from the customer as possible, such as:

^ How does it leak? After it rains, the initial movement of the vehicle or during braking?
^ Does it leak while it is raining?
^ Do they park up or down hill?
^ Did they close the sunroof completely?

Verify the complaint. Can you get water to leak into the vehicle? Are the seats and/or headliner wet?

If you can verify a leak, we have put together some testing tips which may be of assistance, in no particular order.

^ If the vehicle is equipped with a moonroof air deflector and you have verified a leak. Check to see if the moonroof attachment clips have damaged the rubber seal around the glass. If not, remove the moonroof air deflector and retest for water leak.

^ Remove the headliner for better inspection of the drains.

^ Verify that the drain tubes are not sagging or that they are not mounted too high.

^ Remove the sunroof assembly and plug all four drains. Fill the trough with water and check for leaks. If after the vehicle has sat overnight and water has entered inside, the water has probably seeped under the rails. These will have to be sealed with silicone.
