Remove and Replace
Removal1. Disconnect negative battery cable.
2. Raise and support vehicle.
3. Remove rear exhaust pipe and muffler.
4. Remove front cover of rear differential mount.
5. Wrap center DOJ with a cloth or rubberized material to prevent rubber boot from damage.
6. Prepare an oil can and cap as transmission oil will flow out from the extension once the propeller shaft is removed.
7. As you remove the propeller shaft, take care not to damage the sliding surfaces of the rear drive shaft spline, oil seal and sleeve yoke.
8. Remove the propeller shaft.
9. Insert the oil cap into the extension to prevent transmission oil from leaking out.
10. Remove the spring pins from the DOJ of the rear drive shafts.
11. Remove the heat sealed cover.
12. Remove clamps and bracket for the parking brake cable.
13. Remove lower differential bracket.
14. Support the rear differential with a transmission jack.
15. Remove the self locking nuts connecting the rear differential to the rear member.
16. Loosen bolt (1) first, then remove the two mount bolts that secure the differential front member to the body.
Caution: Support front member with the use of a helper to prevent it from dropping.
17. While slowly lowering the transmission jack, move rear differential forward and remove the bolts from the rear member.
18. Remove front member from body.
19. Remove rear drive shaft from rear differential and remove rear differential from body.
Installation
1. While raising rear differential with a transmission jack, insert rear drive shaft DOJ into differential spindle. Tighten the four self-locking nuts at the front and two self-locking nuts at the rear.
2. Position front member on body by passing it under the parking brake cable and secure to rear differential.
3. Install other parts in the revers order of dismounting.
4. After installation fill differential carrier with gear oil to the upper plug level. Use Three-bound 1205 or equivalent fluid, capacity is 0.8 US qt. (0.7 Imp qt.).
5. Lower vehicle to the ground.
6. Connect the negative cable to the battery.
