Wheel Speed Sensor: Service and Repair
Speed Sensor for ABS System Front and Rear
A: REMOVAL
1) Disconnect front speed sensor located in engine compartment.
2) Remove bolts which secure sensor harness to bracket.
3) Remove bolts which secure front speed sensor to housing, and remove front speed sensor.
Be careful not to damage pole piece located at tip of the sensor during removal.
4) Remove front disc brake caliper and disc rotor from housing after removing front tire.
5) Remove front drive shaft and housing and hub assembly.
6) Remove tone wheel while removing hub from housing and hub assembly.
Be careful not to damage teeth faces of tone wheel during removal.
7) Remove rear seat and disconnect rear speed sensor connector.
8) Remove rear sensor harness bracket from rear trailing link.
9) Remove rear back plate from rear speed sensor.
10) Remove rear tone wheel while removing hub from housing and hub assembly.
a. Be careful not to damage pole piece of sensor and teeth faces.
b. Do not pull sensor harness during removal.
C: INSTALLATION
1. FRONT SPEED SENSOR
1) Install tone wheel on hub, then install housing on hub assembly.
2) Temporarily install front speed sensor on housing.
Be careful not to strike speed sensor's pole piece and tone wheel's teeth against adjacent metal parts during installation.
3) Install front driver shaft to hub spline and transmission spindle.
4) Install front speed sensor on strut and wheel apron bracket.
Tightening torque:
23 - 42 Nm (2.3 - 4.3 kg-m, 17 - 31 ft-lb)
5) Place a thickness gauge between speed sensor's pole piece and tone wheel's tooth face. After standard clearance is obtained over the entire perimeter, tighten speed sensor on housing to specified torque.
Speed sensor standard clearance:
1.0 - 1.5 mm (0.039 - 0.059 in)
Tightening torque:
10 - 16 Nm (1.0 - 1.6 kg-m, 7 - 12 ft-lb)
If the clearance is outside specifications, readjust.
2. REAR SPEED SENSOR
1) Install rear tone wheel on hub, then rear housing on hub.
2) Temporarily install rear speed sensor on back plate.
Be careful not to strike speed sensor's pole piece and tone wheel's teeth against adjacent metal parts.
3) Install rear drive shaft to rear housing and rear differential spindle.
4) Install rear sensor harness on rear trailing link.
Tightening torque:
23 - 42 Nm (2.3 - 4.3 kg-m, 17 - 31 ft-lb)
5) Place a thickness gauge between speed sensor's pole piece and tone wheel's tooth face. After standard clearance is obtained over the entire perimeter, tighten speed sensor on back plate to specified torque.
Speed sensor standard clearance:
0.8 - 1.3 mm (0.031 - 0.051 in)
Tightening torque:
10 - 16 Nm (1.0 - 1.6 kg-m, 7 - 12 ft-lb)
If the clearance is outside specifications, readjust.
