APPLICABILITY ALL LEGACY 2.2 LITER ENGINES
PRODUCED BEFORE ENGINE # 345344 (TURBO)
AND 339610 (NATURALLY ASPIRATED)
SUBJECT: ENGINE OIL SEEPAGE AT CYLINDER HEAD OR ACCESSORY MOUNTING BOLTS
Figure 1:
Should you encounter engine oil seepage from the open bolt hole at the top of the right hand cylinder head near the rear, the actual cause of this leak may be porosity of the cylinder block and not at the bolt hole where the oil is seeping. (See Figure 1.)
To repair this condition:
1. Remove air intake duct (non-turbo). Remove air intake resonator chamber (turbo).
2. Remove air cleaner housing assembly from engine compartment.
3. Remove the top rear cylinder head bolt from the right cylinder head.
4. Carefully clean all oil from the bolt threads and from the cylinder block threads using a quality non-petroleum based cleaner, i.e. a spray brake cleaner.
5. Apply THREE BOND 1215 sealer (P/N 004403007) to the cylinder head bolt threads.
DO NOT APPLY EXCESSIVE SEALER TO THREADS.
DO NOT APPLY SEALER TO THREADED HOLES IN CYLINDER BLOCK.
DO NOT APPLY OIL TO THE BOLT THREADS.
6. Reinstall the affected bolt and retorque to the following REVISED specification.
Tighten bolt to 20 N-m (2.0 Kg-m, 14 ft.lbs.).
Tighten bolt an additional 80-90 Degrees.
DO NOT TIGHTEN BOLT MORE THAN 90 DEGREES.
Figure 2:
In addition, should you encounter engine oil seepage from any accessory mounting bolts, the following procedures must be performed to ensure a permanent effective repair.
1. Remove the affected bolt.
2. Thoroughly clean all oil from the bolt and the cylinder block threads with a quality non-petroleum based cleaner, i.e. a spray brake cleaner. (See Figure 2.)
3. Apply THREE BOND 1215 sealer P/N 004403007 to the bolt threads. DO NOT APPLY EXCESSIVE SEALER TO THREADS. DO NOT APPLY SEALER TO THREADED HOLES IN CYLINDER BLOCK. DO NOT APPLY OIL TO BOLT THREADS.
Reinstall the affected bolt and retorque to the proper specification.
