1990 LEGACY 2.2 LITER ENGINE
SUBJECT: LEGACY HLA NOISE
Should you encounter a Legacy engine with noisy hydraulic lash adjusters (R7A) which do not pressurize during normal running, the cause may be a partially blocked oil passage in the rocker shaft.
Procedure for cleaning rocker shaft:
(1) Remove and disassemble the valve rocker shaft assembly from which you suspect the noise is coming in accordance with the Legacy Service Manual, chapter 2-3, W3A0 through W3E0.
(2) Check the rocker shaft for foreign matter in the oil holes; for example, a tiny pliable piece of liquid gasket. Clean all holes and passages thoroughly.
(3) Make sure to bleed the HLA of air in accordance with the Legacy Service Manual, chapter 2-3, W3C1.
(4) Reassemble the engine, run and check it for noise.
