A/T - Slow Engagement Into Drive or Reverse
NUMBER: 16-36-90DATE02-26-90
APPLICABILITY
ALL LOYALE, XT, AND LEGACY MODELS WITH 4EAT
SUBJECT:
4EAT SLOW ENGAGEMENT
Should you encounter a 4EAT equipped vehicle that exhibits a slow (1-5 second) engagement into "D" or "R" range after an extended or overnight soak, a modified oil cooler outlet pipe with a check valve is now available to assist with this condition. The check valve in the oil cooler pipe assists in preventing torque converter bleed-down. The oil cooler pipe is located on the left side of the transmission case near the axle and is easily accessible.
INSTALLATION
Figure 1:
To replace, disconnect and remove the existing pipe. The new oil cooler pipe is of a multipiece design. See fig. 1 on the back of this page.
To install:
1. Insert the flare into the transmission case, large end first.
2. Install the check valve body and torque to 22 ft.lbs.
3. Install the modified oil cooler pipe assembly. Ensure that an aluminum washer is used on either side of the modified oil cooler pipe. The washers are available in three different thickness sizes and any thickness may be used on either side of the pipe. Torque the union bolt to 25 ft.lbs.
4. Install the bracket support bolt.
5. Install rubber hose and tighten clamp.
6. Check and add transmission fluid, as necessary, to compensate for fluid lost during this exchange.
This pipe will be incorporated in production for the Loyale, XT, and Legacy models starting with approximately 1/90 production. An additional, one way check ball will be installed in the torque convertor housing starting with 11/89 production and transmission # 136395.
