Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Raise and support hood.
2. Disconnect ground cable from battery and transmission.
3. Remove hill-holder, clutch and speedometer cables.
4. Disconnect electrical connectors from the following components: oxygen sensor, transmission harness, inhibitor switch and revolution sensor.
5. Remove starter motor attaching bolts, then the starter motor.
6. Remove air intake boot.
7. Remove pitching stopper rod from bracket.
8. Remove right side engine to transmission attaching nut and bolt.
9. Raise and support vehicle, then remove engine to body side bracket buffer rod.
10. Install engine support bracket No. 927160000 to body side bracket.
11. Connect adjuster to engine side buffer rod bracket.
12. Install engine support No. 927150000 to engine support bracket.
13. Remove exhaust system as follows:
a. Raise and support vehicle.
b. Remove front exhaust pipe to engine retaining nuts. Leave one nut attached to temporarily support the pipe.
c. Separate front exhaust pipe from rear pipe.
d. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from transmission by removing hanger bolt.
e. Remove remaining exhaust pipe to engine retaining nut, then the exhaust pipe.
14. On 4WD models, remove propeller shaft. Plug opening at rear extension to prevent oil from flowing out.
15. On all models, remove gear shift system as follows:
a. Remove spring.
b. Disconnect rod from transmission.
c. Disconnect stay from transmission.

16. Loosen nut and bolt on lower side of plate, Fig. 2, then separate stabilizer from transverse link.
17. Remove bolt attaching transverse link to front crossmember on each side.
18. Remove hand brake cable bracket from transverse link, then lower transverse link.
19. Using a drift and hammer, remove spring pin and separate axle shaft from driveshaft on each side, Fig. 3.
20. Remove engine to transmission attaching nuts, then position transmission jack under transmission.
21. Remove rear rubber cushion attaching nuts, then the rear and rigid crossmembers.
22. Raise front of engine by turning engine support adjuster counterclockwise.
23. Move transmission jack rearward until mainshaft is withdrawn from clutch cover.
24. Reverse procedure to install.
