NUMBER 16-46-91

DATE 04-29-91

APPLICABILITY 1990 AND 1991 LOYALE MODELS

WITH 3 SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

SUBJECT: 3AT SHIFT SELECTOR LINKAGE ADJUSTMENT CLARIFICATION AND SERVICE MANUAL CORRECTION

Note: This TSB has been updated by TSB # 16-46-91R, dated 05-13-91 and TSB # 16-46-91R2, dated 07-01-91.

There are two different selector arm "neutral" position locations for 3AT shift linkages. The transmission number and transmission production date will determine which location is correct for the transmission you are servicing.

NOTE: USE THE 1990 GENUINE SUBARU LOYALE SERVICE MANUAL (G148BE 4/89) 3-3 TITLED "TRANSMISSION CONTROL SYSTEM" PAGES 19 AND 20, ALONG WITH THE INFORMATION PROVIDED IN THIS BULLETIN.

Figure 1:

PROCEDURE

Put the transmission selector lever handle (inside the vehicle) in the neutral position.

Loosen both adjusting nuts on the linkage rod at the selector arm connector on the transmission. See Figure 1.

Ensure the selector arm is in the neutral detent valve body position with no force applied to the selector arm in either forward or reverse direction.

NOTE: USE THE DRAWINGS IN FIGURE 1 AS A GUIDE TO LOCATE THE APPROXIMATE SELECTOR ARM NEUTRAL DETENT POSITION.

Figure 2:

Turn nut "A" clockwise until it just contacts the selector arm connector. Then, turning nut "A" counter clockwise, move it away from the selector arm 5/6 of a turn (five flat surfaces of the nut). This creates a clearance of approximately 1.0 mm (0.04 in.) between nut "A" and the selector arm connector. See Figure 2.

NOTE: DO NOT PRELOAD THE ADJUSTMENT BY PUSHING ON THE SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE, ROD OR THE SELECTOR ARM AT THE TRANSMISSION.

Hold nut "A" using a 12 mm open end wrench, turn nut "B" clockwise and tighten to the selector arm connector. Torque to 7-13 ft.lbs.

Figure 3:

INCLINE HOLD TEST

Put the vehicle on an incline of 5 to 10 Degrees with the front end up and hold the vehicle using the foot brakes only.

NOTE: Do not use the emergency brake. See Figure 3.

Inside the vehicle, with the ignition "ON", slowly move the selector lever handle into ihe "Park" position, using the dash indicator light and by listening for the shift-lock solenoid "click" in the instrument panel.

NOTE: MAKE SURE THE BUTTON ON THE SELECTOR LEVER HANDLE IS RELEASED.

Remove the ignition key and confirm that the selector lever handle is locked in "park".

Release the foot operated brakes.

The vehicle parking pawl should engage to prevent the vehicle from rolling backwards. If not, loosen nut "A" and rotate one flat counterclockwise and tighten nut "B". Perform the incline hold test again. It may be necessary to continue this up to a total of 8 flats of nut "A", to ensure parking pawl engagement.

The following procedure can be claimed under the Subaru Limited Warranty during the 12-month, 12,000 mile adjustment period only, using the following information:
