Replacement of Ignition Relays
We are continuing to see a large number of warranty claims for ignition relay replacements in vehicles produced after the countermeasure was incorporated into production. The countermeasure VINs and starting dates are:
SOA Technical Services has collected and tested many of the relays that were removed from vehicles which had countermeasure parts installed and found that they were operating properly.
The typical symptom of an ignition relay failure includes some or all of the following conditions:
^ No engine start, hard engine starting or rough idle after starting, especially with a cold engine.
^ No reading on the Select Monitor while the rough idle is occurring.
^ "Check Engine" light on after starting the engine.
^ Any combination of trouble codes "24 & 35" in memory and/or "D" check.
Refer to the October '92 Helpline Update.
These symptoms do not definitely indicate that the relay is the cause of the complaint but that they can be used as a guideline to aid in diagnosis. If the vehicle was produced after the production change for modification of the ignition relay, it should be assumed that the relay is NOT the cause of the problem.
If the unnecessary replacement of ignition relays is not eliminated, SOA will initiate an automatic collection of relays replaced on vehicles produced after the countermeasures. These parts will be tested and debits will be issued for all parts found to be "not failed as claimed".
