Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Raise and support hood, then remove spare tire and support.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove hill-holder cable, clutch cable and return spring.
4. Disconnect electrical connectors and vacuum hoses from the following as equipped: oxygen sensor, neutral switch, back-up light, transmission cord and differential lock vacuum hose.
5. Remove pitching stopper rod, then install engine support assembly 926610000 to pitching stopper rod bracket.
6. Remove starter motor attaching bolts, then the starter motor.
7. Remove right side engine to transmission attaching nut and bolt.
8. On turbocharged models, remove exhaust system as follows:
a. Remove turbo upper heat shield and accelerator cable cover.
b. Raise and support vehicle, then loosen two front exhaust pipe attaching bolts.
c. Lower vehicle, then remove turbo lower heat shield.
d. Separate center exhaust pipe from turbocharger.
e. Raise and support vehicle, then separate center exhaust pipe from rear pipe.
f. Disconnect the center exhaust pipe from transmission by removing hanger bolt.
g. On 4WD models, separate muffler from rear exhaust pipe.
9. On models less turbocharger, remove exhaust system as follows:
a. Raise and support vehicle.
b. Remove front exhaust pipe to engine retaining nuts. Leave one nut attached to temporarily support the exhaust pipe.
c. Separate front exhaust pipe from rear pipe.
d. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from transmission by removing hanger bolt.
e. Remove remaining exhaust pipe to engine retaining nut, then exhaust pipe.
f. On 4WD models, separate muffler from rear exhaust pipe.
10. On all models, remove rigid crossmember.
11. On 4WD models, remove propeller shaft. Plug opening at rear extension to prevent oil from flowing out.
12. On all models, remove gear shift system as follows:
a. Remove spring.
b. Disconnect rod from transmission.
c. Disconnect stay from transmission.
13. On 4WD models, disconnect select rod from transfer rail.

14. On all models, loosen nut and bolt on lower side of plate, Fig. 2, then separate stabilizer from transverse link.
15. Remove bolt attaching transverse link to front crossmember on each side.
16. Remove hand brake cable bracket from transverse link. Remove transverse link attaching nut and bolt, then lower transverse link.
17. Using a drift and hammer, remove spring pin and separate axle shaft from driveshaft, on each side. Fig. 3.
18. Remove engine to transmission attaching nuts, then position transmission jack under transmission.
19. Remove rear rubber cushion attaching nuts, then the rear and rigid crossmembers.
20. Move transmission jack rearward until mainshaft is withdrawn from clutch cover.
21. Reverse procedure to install.
