Rear Differential

PRELIMINARY PROCEDURES
1. Remove rear exhaust pipe and muffler.

REMOVAL
1. Place transmission in neutral and release parking brake.
2. Raise vehicle on hoist.
3. Remove wheels.





4. Remove exhaust heat sheild.





5. Remove front differential cover.

Matching Mark:





6. Place alignment mark on differential and drifeshaft flange.
7. Remove rear driveshaft fasteners. (Leave one in loosely so driveshaft does not fall during next step.)





8. Remove center support fasteners.





9. Remove remaining bolt at differential, remove driveshaft and install plug in rear of transaxle.





10. Remove parking brake cable clamps and heat sealed cover.





11. Disconnect ABS sensor cable clamp from trailing link mount.





12. Disconnect ABS sensor cable clamp from trailing link.





13. Remove parking brake cable guide.





14. Remove rear stablizer link.

Trailing Link:





15. Remove rear trailing link bolts.





16. Remove rear lateral link bolts.





17. Remove rear axle from the differential.





18. Secure axles with wire.





19. Place jack under differential.

Fasteners:





20. Remove bolts fastening differential to rear crossmmber.





21. Loosen bolt 1, then remove bolts 2 that fasten differential member to body. Use an assistant to prevent member from falling.





22. While SLOWLY lowering differential, move differential foward and remove bolts from rear crossmember.
23. Remove front member from body.





24. Lower differential.


INSTALLATION
Install in reverse order with the following notes:
^ Use new circlips on the end of axle joints.
^ Check fluid level in transaxle and differential.

Rear Differential Mounting System:




Rear Crossmember:





^ Torque all fasteners according to illustrations and the following:
Driveshaft center support fasteners: 35 - 42 ft.lbs. (47 - 57 Nm)
Driveshaft flange fasteners: 17 - 29 ft.lbs. (24 - 39 Nm)








^ To prevent damaging the differential axle seals, use Subaru special tool
2899PA090 - SIDE OIL SEAL PROTECTOR.





^ Press firmly on housing to ensure axles are completely installed.
