Throttle Position Sensor: Adjustments

Fig. 102 Throttle Sensor Inspection:

1. Check and adjust idle contact as follows:
a. Insert a feeler gauge between stopper screw of throttle body and stopper.
b. Using a suitable ohmmeter, check for continuity between terminals A and B.
c. Ensure continuity exists between terminals A and B when throttle is completely closed.
d. Insert a .0122 inch feeler gauge into position as previously described, and ensure continuity exists between terminals A and B. Throttle opening should be 1.0°.
e. Insert a .0311 inch feeler gauge into position as previously described and ensure there is no continuity between terminals A and B. Throttle opening should be 2.5°. If results are not as specified, loosen screws securing throttle sensor to throttle body and rotate throttle sensor body, then repeat steps a through e.
2. Check and adjust throttle opening signal as follows:
a. Measure resistance between terminals B and D. Resistance should be 3500--6500 ohms.
b. Check that resistance between B and C is less than 1000 ohms with throttle valve fully closed and greater than 2400 ohms with valve fully open (about 80% of resistance between B and D).
c. Ensure resistance between B and C increases continuously when throttle valve is moved from fully closed to fully open position.
d. Ensure resistance between B and C decreases continuously when throttle valve is moved from fully open to fully closed position.
e. If results are not as specified, replace sensor.
