Manual Transmission/Transaxle: Service and Repair

1. Raise and support hood, then remove spare tire and support.
2. Disconnect battery ground cable.
3. Remove hill-holder cable, clutch cable and return spring.
4. Disconnect electrical connectors and vacuum hoses from the following as equipped: oxygen sensor, neutral switch, back-up light, transaxle cord and differential lock vacuum hose.
5. Remove pitching stopper rod, then install engine support assembly 926610000 to pitching stopper rod bracket.
6. Remove starter motor attaching bolts, then the starter motor.
7. Remove right side engine to transaxle attaching nut and bolt.
8. Remove exhaust system as follows:
a. Raise and support vehicle.
b. Remove front exhaust pipe to engine retaining nuts. Leave one nut attached to temporarily support the exhaust pipe.
c. Separate front exhaust pipe from rear pipe.
d. Disconnect front exhaust pipe from transaxle by removing hanger bolt.
e. Remove remaining exhaust pipe to engine retaining nut, then exhaust pipe.
9. Remove rigid crossmember.
10. Remove gear shift system as follows:
a. Remove spring.
b. Disconnect rod from transaxle.
c. Disconnect stay from transaxle.

11. Loosen nut and bolt on lower side of plate, Fig. 4, then separate stabilizer from transverse link.
12. Remove bolt attaching transverse link to front crossmember on each side.
13. Remove hand brake cable bracket from transverse link. Remove transverse link attaching nut and bolt, then lower transverse link.

14. Using a drift and hammer, remove spring pin and separate axle shaft from driveshaft, on each side. Fig. 2
15. Remove engine to transaxle attaching nuts, then position transaxle jack under transaxle.
16. Remove rear rubber cushion attaching nuts, then the rear and rigid crossmembers.
17. Move transaxle jack rearward until mainshaft is withdrawn from clutch cover.
18. Reverse procedure to install.
