Engine: Service and Repair

1. Place vehicle on lift and open hood.
2. Relieve fuel system pressure as outlined under Technican Safety Information.
3. Disconnect battery cables and remove battery, then drain coolant.
4. Remove radiator assembly as follows:
a. Disconnect radiator fan motor connector, then radiator hose from thermostat cover.
b. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, disconnect transaxle cooler hoses from pipes.
c. On all models, remove V-belt cover, then disconnect radiator inlet hose from radiator.
d. Remove radiator upper bracket, then the radiator assembly.
5. Discharge A/C system, then disconnect A/C hoses from compressor.
6. Disconnect mass air flow sensor connector. Remove air intake duct with air cleaner upper cover, then air cleaner element.
7. Remove canister and bracket.
8. On models equipped with A/C, disconnect FICD solenoid valve and compressor connectors.
9. Disconnect engine harness and oxygen sensor connectors.
10. Disconnect engine ground terminal and alternator connector and terminal.
11. Disconnect accelerator and cruise control cables.
12. On models equipped with manual transaxle, disconnect clutch release spring, clutch cable and hill holder cable. Disconnect hill holder on release fork side and transfer it to PHV side.
13. Disconnect cruise control and brake booster vacuum hoses, then the heater hoses.
14. Remove power steering pump from bracket. Position pump on right side wheel apron.
15. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front and center exhaust pipes.
16. Remove lower engine to transaxle mounting bolts, then the front cushion to front crossmember mounting nuts.
17. On models equipped with automatic transaxle, separate torque converter from driveplate as follows:
a. Lower vehicle, then remove service hole plug.
b. Remove torque converter to driveplate bolts.
c. Remove other bolt while rotating engine using crankshaft pulley wrench tool No. 499977000, or equivalent.
18. Remove pitching stopper, then disconnect fuel and evaporation hoses.
19. Support engine with suitable lifting device and transaxle with jack.
20. Remove upper transaxle to engine mounting bolts.
21. Remove engine from vehicle as follows:
a, Slightly raise engine, then the transaxle with jack.
b. Move engine horizontally until mainshaft is withdrawn from clutch cover.
c. Slowly move engine away from engine compartment.
22. Reverse procedure to install.
