Neutral Safety Switch: Description and Operation

PURPOSE
The inhibitor switch senses transmission gear selection. This information is used the ECU to maintain steady idle speed.

LOCATION
The switch is mounted to the side of the transmission, at the shift shaft.

OPERATION
Whenever the ignition is ON, the switch functions. When the transmission is shifted to either PARK or NEUTRAL a terminal on the ECU becomes grounded, indicating which gear the vehicle is in.
