Inspection After A Collision
CAUTION: The air bag system must be inspected if the vehicle was involved in a collision even if deployment did not take place. Check system for trouble codes and proper warning lamp operation. If deployment has taken place, the air bag module and front sensors must be replaced. Any components which have been diagnosed as faulty should also be replaced. The following inspection should be performed:1. If deployment did take place, replace the air bag module, If deployment did not take place, inspect the air bag module as follows:
a. Check air bag module pad and side surface for scratches and cracks. If cracks or scratches are present, replace the air bag module.
b. Check air bag module wiring harness and electrical connectors for damage and replace as necessary. Also ensure wiring harness electrical connectors are properly connected.
c. Check air bag to steering wheel mounting for damage. Replace damaged components.
d. Check air bag surfaces for contamination, such as oil, grease on surface. If surface is contaminated, replace the air bag module.
2. If deployment has taken place, replace the front sensors. If deployment did not take place, inspect the front sensors as follows:
a. Check front sensor housing for cracks and damage. If cracks and damage are present, replace the front sensor.
b. Check the sensor mounting bracket for damage and replace as necessary.
c. Check manufacturer identification label on sensor and replace as necessary.
d. Check front sensor wiring harness and electrical connectors for damage. If wiring or electrical connectors are damage, replace the wiring harness. Also ensure wiring harness electrical connectors are properly connected.
3. The main wiring harness should be inspected for the follows:
a. If any wiring is open or exposed the wiring harness should be replaced.
b. If any electrical connector or conduit is damaged, the wiring harness should be replaced. Also check electrical connectors for proper connection.
4. The air bag control unit should be inspected for the following:
a. If control is dented or case is deformed, replace the control unit.
b. If control unit bracket is cracked, bent or damaged, replace as necessary.
c. If control unit electrical connector is damaged, replace as necessary.
5. Inspect combination switch and roll connector for cracks and other damage and replace as necessary.
6. Inspect steering wheel and steering column for damage and replace as necessary.
