Ignition Control Module: Testing and Inspection
CHECK IGNITION SYSTEM FOR SPARK1. Remove plug cord cap from each spark plug.
2. Install new plug on plug cord cap.
CAUTION: Do not remove spark plug from engine.
3. Contact plug threaded portion on engine.
4. Open throttle valve fully and crank engine to check that spark occurs at each cylinder.
CHECK POWER SUPPLY CIRCUIT FOR IGNITION COIL
Voltage Test:
1. Turn ignition OFF.
2. Unplug connector from ignition coil.
3. Turn ignition ON.
4. Measure power supply voltage between coil connector terminal and body.
Connector & Terminal Voltage
(E29) 2 - body 10 Volts minimum
CHECK IGNITION COIL
Ignition Coil Testing:
1. Measure resistance between coil terminals to check primary coil.
Terminals Resistance
No. 2 - 1 0.7 Ohm
No. 2 - 3 0.7 Ohm
2. Measure resistance between plug cable contacts to check secondary coil.
Connector & Terminal Voltage
No. 1 - 2 13.8 K Ohms
No. 3 - 4 13.8 K Ohms
CHECK HARNESS CONNECTOR BETWEEN IGNITER AND IGNITION COIL
Harness Test:
1. Turn ignition OFF.
2. Unplug connector from igniter.
3. Measure resistance of harness connector between coil and igniter.
Connector & Terminal Resistance
(E24) 5 - (E9) 1 10 Ohms maximum
(E24) 6 - (E9) 3 10 Ohms maximum
CHECK INPUT SIGNAL FOR IGNITER
Input Test:
Check if voltage varies synchronously with engine speed when cranking, while monitoring voltage between igniter connector and body.
Connector & Terminal Voltage
(E24) 1 - body 0.1 Volts minimum - 3.4 Volts maximum
(E24) 2 - body 0.1 Volts minimum - 3.4 Volts maximum
CHECK HARNESS CONNECTOR OF IGNITER GROUND CIRCUIT
Ground Test:
1. Turn ignition OFF.
2. Measure resistance between igniter and body.
Connector & Terminal Resistance
(E24) 3 - body 10 Ohms maximum
CHECK HARNESS CONNECTOR BETWEEN ECM AND IGNITER
Harness Test:
1. Unplug ECM connector.
2. Measure resistance of harness connector between ECM and igniter.
Connector & Terminal Resistance
(E30) 20 - (E24) 1 10 Ohms maximum
(E30) 21 - (E24) 2 10 Ohms maximum
(E29) 14 - (E24) 3 10 Ohms maximum
Harness Test:
3. Measure resistance of harness connector between ECM and body to make sure there is no short circuit.
Connector & Terminal Resistance
(E30) 20 - body 1 M Ohm minimum
(E30) 4 - body 1 M Ohm minimum
(E29) 14 - body 1 M Ohm minimum
