Antitheft and Alarm Systems: Description and Operation

Security System

1. FEATURES
- The security system detects a theft action (unauthorized entry in the vehicle), and signals emergency situation by sounding the horn and flashing the headlight, and immobilizes the vehicle by interrupting the starter circuit.
- The emergency situation is monitored by switches which installed all the doors, engine hood, etc. When one of the switch is turned ON, this system judge unauthorized entry in the vehicle and signals to warn, and immobilizes the vehicle.

System Operation

The security system will give the following alarm:
- The headlight flashes and the horn sounds intermittently. In addition, the starter motor will not operate.
- The alarm automatically turns off after 2 to 3 minutes; however, the alarm will reactivate if the vehicle is tampered with again.

The alarm is activated by:
- Opening the door, rear gate or trunk lid without using the key. (Even if the door is opened by releasing the inside door lock lever or opening the trunk lid by operating the trunk lid release.)
- Opening the engine hood. (Even it the engine hood is opened by operating the engine hood release.) Pushing in or pulling out of the key cylinder on the door or trunk lid.

How to arm the system

1. Remove the key from the ignition switch.
2. Make sure that the engine hood and trunk lid are locked.
3. Close all windows. Close and lock all doors and rear gate. The doors and rear gate can be locked either with or without the key.

NOTE: The system can be armed even if the windows are open.

4. Confirm that the security indicator light comes on. (If this light flashes shortly, this may indicate that the any door, engine hood, rear gate or trunk lid is not properly closed. Resume the procedure from beginning.) The light will come on for about 30 seconds and then go out. If, during this 30 seconds time period, the door is unlocked or the ignition key is turned to "ACC" or "ON", the system will not arm. Then the light flashes every 3 seconds to indicate that the system is fully armed. It continues to flash every 3 seconds until the system is disarmed.

NOTE: Even when the driver and/or passengers are in the vehicle, the system will arm with all doors, rear gate, hood and trunk lid locked and ignition key off. After the system has armed, the system will alarm when a driver or passenger opens the door by inside door handle.

To disarm the system

Unlock any door, rear gate or trunk lid with the key or turn the ignition switch to "ACC" or "ON" position.

How to stop alarms

The alarm will stop only by unlocking a door, rear gate or trunk lid with the key. The alarm may not stop if the key is turned to quickly. In such a case, turn the key again more slowly. The alarm will not stop if the ignition switch is turned to "ACC" or "ON".

6. STARTER INTERRUPT RELAY/HEADLIGHT ALARM RELAY
The starter interrupt relay, activates by a signal from the security control module, interrupts the starter circuit keeping the starter from operation.

In armed state, the system will not activate the starter interrupt relay and starter circuit functions normally.

The system activates the starter interrupt relay when the system is in alarm state, and keep this condition until the system is turned to disarmed state.

The headlight alarm relay is adopted in headlight circuit, and this relay activates when the security system is in alarm state.

In alarm state, the security control module switches the output signal ON-OFF alternately to flash the headlight via a headlight alarm relay.

The starter interrupt and headlight alarm relays employ the same parts and are interchangeable.

The starter interrupt relay and headlight alarm relay are installed behind the lower cover located under the steering column.

7. ENGINE HOOD SWITCH
The engine hood switch detects the opening of engine hood and sends signal to the security control module.

When this switch is turned ON in armed state before opening the door or trunk lid (or rear gate), the security system recognizes the emergency and turns to alarm state.

The engine hood switch is located at front-left position of the engine compartment.

8. KEY CYLINDER SWITCH/TAMPER SWITCH
The key cylinder switch detects the turning of key cylinder.

When the door or trunk lid (or rear gate) is opened in armed state before unlock switch of this switch turns ON, the security system recognizes the emergency and turns to alarm state.

This switch is installed on each door key cylinder and trunk lid (or rear gate) key cylinder.

The tamper switch is built-in each key cylinder switch.

The tamper switch detects the impacts that drives in or plucks off activation to the key cylinder.

These switches are installed to each door key cylinder (driver and passenger) and trunk lid (or rear gate) key cylinder.

9. DOOR LOCK/UNLOCK SWITCH
The door lock/unlock switch is united with power door lock actuator, and detects door lock/unlock condition. When the door latch is unlocked by turning the key cylinder, this switch turns ON.

10. DOOR SWITCH, TRUNK LID SWITCH (SEDAN), REAR GATE SWITCH (WAGON)
These switches are connected to each room light circuit and detects the door opening condition.

The door switch is located at each door opening of the vehicle body.

In SEDAN vehicle, the trunk lid switch is installed to the trunk lid lock (vehicle body side).

In WAGON vehicle, the rear gate switch is installed in rear gate lock latch mechanism (rear gate side).

11. INDICATOR LIGHT
The security indicator light is installed at the left side of meter visor and indicates the status of the system. Refer to 1. FEATURES.

12. CONTROL MODULE
All signals from switches (door, engine hood, .. etc.) are input to the security control module. Based on the signals from these individual switches, the control module recognizes the emergency condition and controls all of the security system functions.

The security control module is installed inside the right side of instrument panel.
